I've always been a lover of short stories. I can't say exactly why, but they have always fascinated me. To me, it takes serious talent and writing ability to create characters and situations we, the reader, can fully invest in while reading a 20 page story. Short stories also give authors the chance to explore wild, off the wall ideas they wouldn't be able to in a full-length novel. King has crafted an outstanding collection here. My favorites from this collection are (in order of appearance):

The Dune
Bad Little Kid
A Death
Afterlife
Blockade Billy
Summer Thunder

There were other entries in this collection I liked, and others I wasn’t as crazy about. For example, I’ve never been much of a poetry fan, so The Bone Church and Tommy didn’t do a lot for me.

All in all, a great collection. At this point in my King fandom (my Kingdom?), I’ve only read Night Shift and The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, as far as short story collections go. Right now, I have Night Shift ranked slightly ahead of Bazaar, but both rank highly on my King rankings.

I really liked B of BD as well; more so than Revival and Doctor Sleep and I am not a big short story fan. I just thought the selections were well picked and the flow was perfect. As for The Bone Church, what the hell was that??? I really wish someone could explain this to me. I was a Lit Major in college and I still can't figure out what this was supposed to be.

I really liked Revival, but I also thought Bazaar was better. I liked that all the stories shared a general theme. It made the stories flow seamlessly, as you said.

And I don't know what he was going for with The Bone Church either. It must have gone over my head.

I'm excited to read Skeleton Crew, and all of the other story collections. I have a feeling all of his collections will rank highly for me, when it's all said and done.

I'll be interested to hear what your reactions are to the various stories in Skeleton. For me, Night Shift and later Skeleton Crew were certainly game changers in short story appreciation.

Enjoy!

Thanks GNT, I pretty much had gotten that. I guess my question is more what was the

Thanks GNT. I pretty much knew that. I guess my question was asked more in the rhetorical sense and is really about the structure and writing of the piece. I think it's just a waste of pages in what is almost a perfect compilation of stories.

I too liked some of the stories on your list, but "A Death," I have to be honest, wasn't too entertaining to me.

I just got back to the book and started reading "Tommy." I actually did not think I would like this, but truthfully, I'm enjoying it.
