Some ladies in my book club suggested I read Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. This is fantasy and way out of my normal reading bubble. But I decided to give the book a try b/c it was a favorite of these two fellow club members. I am about 10 pages in and ughhhh, I am not liking it! This one may take me a lot longer than normal to get through. I hope it doesn't get me off track for my reading challenge!
I just used my Audible credit for March to purchase Secrets of a Charmed Life. This is WW2 historical fiction, my favorite! I was drawn to this book because it touched on a topic I haven't read about before. Many London children were moved out of the city b/c of the bombing during WW2. This story follows two sisters. I think it has good potential and got a lot of good ratings on Goodreads and Audible.

Im not much into the masochism stuff either... in real life or in a book! But I paid $8 for the book so I'm darn well gonna read it!

Finished Ursual K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. It exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed it. Her prose is some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read.
It's about an ambassador from Earth coming to an alien planet that's inhabited by humans--but they're all bisexual (not sure if that's the technical word) in that they have no genders, and everyone is literally both a boy and girl, and can choose between the two only when they're in "heat". I'm not sure what my problem was initially with it, as I don't think it's the subject matter, and it's really a beautiful book.
Anyway, now I'm kind of out of options, so I think it's back to The Twelve.

If you feel like more Leguin you can always read The Dispossessed or The Word for World is Forest.
I plan to. When I said "out of options" I just meant without going to purchase something new. There're tons of books I want to read, I just don't own them all...yet.
Just started Jodi Picoult's Sing You Home. I've heard very positive and extremely negative reviews on this one.
fljoe0 Finally got The Book of Matt by Stephen Jimenez from the library. Less than 50 pages in, but some really interesting stuff so far. I'm not crazy about Jimenez's writing, but think I will finish it quickly anyway. Thanks again for the rec!

It's a cool title, right? But what does it mean? I didn't know until the end of the book.
The left hand of darkness is (drum roll) LIGHT!
Think of a yin-yang. The dark swirl on the right...on the left, white. I think it also has to do with the duality of humans (see bisexual men/women, not to mention spiritual and other connotations) but who cares about that...
It's a cool title, right? But what does it mean? I didn't know until the end of the book.

I have put off reading The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood because of the fantasy element. I hope to get around to it, eventually. What book club books have you liked, so far?
Interesting choice, let me know how you like it. The description makes it sound a bit sappy for my taste...but you never know!

I just recently joined two clubs, one meets in person and the other is on FB. So far we have read All The Light We Cannot See, which I loved b/c i love WW@ Historical Fiction. The other book we have read so far is"Where'd You Go, Bernadette." That was a fast easy read that I only gave 3 stars on Goodreads.
The next book so far is "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." I read this in High School and remember enjoying it. I am going to re-read since that was quite a long time ago!!
If you want to read a really really good book club type book I would suggest "The Power of One." That may be my all time fav book ever.
Re Atwood.... She definitely deserves to be read. Start with The Handmaids Tale and if you like that go on with the Oryx and Crake trilogy.
I've only read the Handmaid's Tale by Atwood, but I highly recommend that one.
I've read "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" and loved it, too. I started reading "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" when it came out but it was on a waiting list and I was reading other books at the time. Yes, I would say read Atwood's classic "The Handmaiden's Tale" to see if you like her. I'm not really a big fan of her but I am objective enoigh to see that she's a phenomenal writer even though her subject matter isn't always compelling to me. Thanks for your recommendations.
I'm going to add "The Handmaind's Tale" to my Goodreads list. I love that website! So easy to maintain a list of things I want to read!
