Troll 2 has been termed the worst movie of all time, and it pretty well has everything. A writer and director from Italy with some knowledge of written English and basically no knowledge of spoken English assemble an amateur cast to film a movie in Utah. The director is so clueless that to this day he believes the movie is popular because it is good.
It is just all wrong starting with the title. There isn't a troll in it--it deals with the nefarious plans of goblins to trap and devour humans. It was titled Troll 2 because of an earlier semi-success with a movie called Troll and sometimes the two are sold together although unrelated except for titles and studio. The actor playing the father was probably chosen for his resemblance to Craig T. Nelson, (certainly none were chosen for acting ability), giving the feel of a bad Poltergeist ripoff. If bad acting were a crime, the actress playing the daughter in particular might be getting out about now after doing some hard time. The rest of the cast consists of a gang of loonies pitted against little people in bad paper bag and burlap getups. The main character is the kid brother, Joshua, who is an absolute delight.
It is nothing if not entertaining, just one WTF moment after another. The actors were required to speak the dialogue exactly as written--by people with little acquaintance either with Americans or the English language--so the words are technically correct, but not what anyone would ever possibly actually say, creating an odd, distorted atmosphere. With people acting normal in bizarre situations and bizarre in normal situations, it works best as a comedy, only it would be impossible to intentionally produce a horror spoof as a comedy and end up with anything like this. It is simply surreal.
DO NOT WATCH ALONE! You need several friends to laugh and make sarcastic remarks. This film has spawned conventions and the immortal phrase, "You can't piss on hospitality! I won't allow it!" Although my favorite line is, "What kind of a fairy tale is this anyway?" It just sums up so much.
