When there is time, I like the long drives, too. You don't get to see as much when you just fly from point A to point B. When I was 16, during the summer vacation from school, my mom, grandma, sister and I went on a long driving trip from South Florida to California to Vancouver and back (plus all the places in between). I think we were on the road for close to 2 months. Looking back, it was a great trip. During the trip, being cooped up for 2 months with everyone did get a little stressful at times. ;-D Driving all the way across Texas and Montana takes a long time. ;-D
Cool. What were you driving?

Only if you are with a smoker (or two of them) when you do not smoke - we took a trip to Florida to visit my ex's Mom and Dad (drove from Ontario) - we got there smelling like a smoked ham. When I look back on it now (that was the 80s) I cannot believe there were two adults smoking at the same time in an enclosed car in winter with a two year old in the back seat (my SIL and my then hubby).

Wow - the things we used to put up with, without a thought of how stupid it was!

But anyway, we are getting off topic. Although Andy smokes (he says only 8 or 9 a day) he is very considerate and does not do it in the car :a28:

I will be at the King Kon 2018 come Hell or high water. I know, I know - we were supposed to go to Colorado and then he surprised me by coming back from up North three weeks early!

I have given him tons of notice plus we could either fly and rent a car or perhaps drive all that way - I would not mind going through Ontario (my old stomping grounds) to get there.

Fingers crossed I do not have to make the trip by myself this time. But what the hey - I have CAA and travel insurance etc.

Hopefully Josh will still be with Pam and perhaps she can keep an eye on him, or we will hire a respite worker if we are gone more than a week.
:lol2::okay:

How can someone with such a discerning taste in scotch have such low standards in clam chowder? There is no compromise in the chowder war, no middle ground, no 'can’t we just all get along.' The chowder war is not some light fare... It’s Allies versus Axis, Ali versus Frazier, Heaven versus Hell (Purgatory is never the goal). Vehemence and genuine indignation are the instruments of war. Take no prisoners!

Clam chowder needs tomatoes for flavor. The merging of the colorful section of the garden and the sea is pure ambrosia.

Nuff said!

GIVE ME MANHATTAN OR GIVE ME DEATH!

Call me Switzerland. :D I like sushi, too, even when it's cooked.

Grandma and I like chowder, period. When we were in Ireland for our 25th (and tomorrow is our 43rd), we had a seafood chowder that just put everything else down in the ranks.

So give us chowder with tomato, or not, with potato, or not. We'll like it.
Yes - Happy Anniversary - I tried to wish you one last night but I was on my phone and hard to pull up a picture!

The Modern gift for 43 years is travel - so take her out to Ronny McDees! (in some exotic far away place)

Switzerland? I’d have big reservations with the thinking of someone that includes a corkscrew in their army knife. :)

Last Fall on trip to pick up my daughter from College I decided to take her to the best seafood restaurant in the Poconos, Smuggler's Cove, for her birthday.

I ordered the Live Maine Lobster, but instead of going with the usual spicy hot house seafood gumbo or French onion, gratinée, they had clam chowder as the Soup du Jour. I asked if it was Manhattan or New England. The waitress said both.

My daughter had heard my ramblings about clam chowder but had never tasted either. So I ordered both varieties for her to sample.

She tried them and begrudgingly told me... sorry, but she preferred the gross creamy concoction. I told her is was okay and it was a good thing she was a whiz at math because she failed in the taste appreciation test. :p

Did we pick an official date yet? I have a means of getting there, but it involves Amtraking to D.C. then riding north with a friend (new to you guys, yay, new blood!) getting back to D.C. and getting both of us home before August. She's coming from Jacksonville and will need a day or two after the Kon, I'll need a little longer to get back and get my son ready for school and also there is a thing I do the first week of August.

If the date is chosen, I will work around it, because life isn't about me and I understand that. But if the committee is staring at the calendar wondering "However shall we choose between these two weekends," then I am tossing my schedule into the ring for consideration to lean earlier. ;;D

If it's been picked and I didn't see it while skimming the thread, just throw something (hopefully either soft or edible) at me and say "Shhhhhh, Jen, the adults are talking!!!!"

Discussing this with B and trying to get him to go for it. We get a $99 companion fare every year with our Alaska card. We use it every other year for our Hawai'i trip but we're not going there next year.

When I mentioned this at dinner last night, my Sister-in-Law was effusive with her praise of Maine. When I mentioned it she lit up and told B that, yes, we should go. I'll keep at him. ;)

I read that as "the chowder wars can play out in a bowel near you...":0:

 Oh, mamajen! Can't wait to meet you and spend hours conversing in Simpsons quotes! :love_heart:

Oh good! I was worried no one would get it and I would look (extra) dumb. ;;D
