Dang it. It's the price I pay for being a mythology fan and a Pagan. *sigh*

I skimmed most of the descriptive passages about climbing. Why couldn't Simmons just say 'It was snowing extremely hard as they tried to climb up the side of the mountain.'?I finished The Abominable a little while back. Thought it was excellent, though the detailed mountain climbing parts will be too much for some. Apart from that, the story was pretty straight forward...for Simmons that is.
Song of Kali was okay, but it felt a little xenophobic to me. I am sure that wasn’t Simmons’s intention.Dang it. It's the price I pay for being a mythology fan and a Pagan. *sigh*
I think he wanted readers to know how challenging climbing Everest was by making the story challenging in itself.I skimmed most of the descriptive passages about climbing. Why couldn't Simmons just say 'It was snowing extremely hard as they tried to climb up the side of the mountain.'?
When I watch the trailer, I'm not so sure. It says inspired by true events. So, is this not an adaptation of Simmons' book?Has anyone seen the previews for the new AMC movie The Terror? Is it going to be a show?
Looks interesting and good! When I watch the trailer, I'm not so sure. It says inspired by true events. So, is this not an adaptation of Simmons' book?
His novel is actually based on the true events, that of the ill fated John Franklin Expedition. I see it's directed by Ridley Scott so it should be a corker!!!When I watch the trailer, I'm not so sure. It says inspired by true events. So, is this not an adaptation of Simmons' book?
Oh, ok, I didn't know that. Cool. I will read it one day. I've only read Summer of Night...is that what it's called. Similar to IT.His novel is actually based on the true events, that of the ill fated John Franklin Expedition. I see it's directed by Ridley Scott so it should be a corker!!!
Looks awesome! I'm moving The Terror up on my TBR list. I'd like to read it before the show premieres. When I watch the trailer, I'm not so sure. It says inspired by true events. So, is this not an adaptation of Simmons' book?
For me it is in the top three of Simmons. First Carrion Comfort, Then A Winter Haunting and third The Terror. After that i place Summer Of Night.Looks awesome! I'm moving The Terror up on my TBR list. I'd like to read it before the show premieres.
I own all of these, but haven't read them yet. A while back, I got nice paperback copies of Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night, and Prayers to Broken Stones off Ebay for around $8 in total. I don't think the copies of Summer of Night or Prayers have ever been read. For me it is in the top three of Simmons. First Carrion Comfort, Then A Winter Haunting and third The Terror. One of the best feelings is walking into a thrift shop or used book store and finding a practically unread Stephen King paperback from the seventies or eighties (clean, unbroken spine, no writing in it). Has this ever happened to you? BTW...What is the best haul you've ever found?Nice haul!
Yes, I have found numerous unread older King paperbacks in my thrifting! I am amazed that they were never read and wonder how they survived intact, untouched. My best haul (or find, if that's what you meant) was when I found an immaculate 1st printing hardback of Carrie in a used book store and paid $7.99 for it. I assume that, because of it's size, that the book buyer thought it was a book club edition as those Doubleday King books were smaller than what we saw after he left them and went to Viking. Man, I practically ran out of that store after I paid for it! Kept waiting for someone to say 'Excuse me, sir, but we made a mistake and you have to pay $799 for that book.' When I got to my car I thought about peeling off the price sticker, walking back into the store to the book buying area and ask them how much they would give me for that book. They had another copy in their glass case a few months before this happened, one that was in average condition and were asking $700 for it so they knew what the value of a 1st printing would be. They could have asked $1,000 for it easily as it's in very near mint condition. And, no, I won't sell it to you for $8.00.One of the best feelings is walking into a thrift shop or used book store and finding a practically unread Stephen King paperback from the seventies or eighties (clean, unbroken spine, no writing in it).
