As I read The Black House, and we are introduced to the characters, I loved Mouse and the gang. Big burly bikers who enjoy their "rep" but are actually very educated and smarter than your average bear. (I rode years ago.... many years ago, but no longer ride, so that's not it.) People see them and immediately form a negative opinion...

The wife and I were in favorite eatery many years ago when I was still working patrol, and there was a loud group of bikers at a nearby table. Full leathers, beards, tatts, the works. The wife started to make a comment but I squeezed her thigh under the table and she controlled herself.

A few minutes later, one of the bikers slide into the booth and said, "Way to keep your woman under control Bro!"

Just before she exploded, she noticed his grin and the laughing blue eyes. He was an undercover officer we knew from my department. Two others in the group we also from narcotics, one from DEA, and the last from the Commonwealth's Attorney's office. You never know.

We have several friends who have gone full biker since they retired. One was my partner when I was flying in the Corps... we flew as Gunners together. He is an IT contractor for the Corps. Another rides his Harley to work at the bank where he runs midnight shift at the operations center. Lol.

You never know.

That is what was weird to me in Black House--I liked Mouse and Bear Girl and the gang much more than I liked Jack! I loved him in The Talisman, but he was sort of... flat, I guess, for me in Black House.

And I never judge. My uncles are bikers, and so are several friends. They do good work around here, raising money for a major cancer center, and no one gives them any credit. Last year they raised over $20K, and no news organization in the state covered it, even though they got a press release. Makes me sad.

I have a friendly acquaintance who is a single mother, poor, no insurance, and she found out she had breast cancer. A local biker club raised 3500 dollars for her. I thought that was pretty cool.

My Marine buddy is a member of a military bike club that provides a "thunder" escort to the funeral procession of fallen military members to insure there will be no anti-war protesters disrupting the services and to honor our fallen brothers. "There is a time and place for everything," he says, "Graveside isn't the place for your protest."

Funny, they haven't had one issue. They have collected lots of hugs and handshakes from family members.

Agree. Funerals are NOT the place for your protest. It hurts my heart for families when someone chooses to protest at a loved ones funeral.

....your words should be memorized by all who behave in the "labeling" way....I have been guilty myself, but learned quickly that most oddballs, sore thumbs and the flat out weird are some of the best folks around....you just have to see around your perceptions......
