I've heard a lot of similar complaints about "The Gunslinger."
I'd suggest instead of slogging through, you pack it all up and put it away for 30 or so years. Then when there is no new SK material coming out you'll have a whole new epic adventure to enjoy. You won't regret it.
(Hey, someone needs to play the devil's advocate, right? )
This is very nearly what I did - I gave it a try in 1987/88 - somewhere thereabouts. Put it away (wish I could remember where!) and tried it again when I'd read everything else - around 2012 and then I spent 2 years reading the entire series. It's what led me to the SKMB - I needed someone to talk DT with.
I told someone in the office last week: "May it do ya fine". Calla-Speak slip ups all the time. It's just such a lovely intimate way of speaking. Like a hug without touching. I love Calla-Speak.
I Calla-Speak. And get weird looks.
