Hello,

What made this book work was Mr. King's insight into human nature and how the mind works. When he writes about how Brady induces people to commit suicide, he portrays EXACTLY what it is like when a person's mind exaggerates the negative ideas that are already present...

"
“Mostly to amuse himself, Brady began to release his own fish into the aquarium of Sadie MacDonald’s mind: tiny poisonous blowfish that were little more than exaggerations of thoughts she herself harboured in the twilight area that exists between the conscious mind and the subconscious."

"The idea is a voice, and it comes to her with a kind of revelatory logic...."

In the heat of the moment, that is exactly what it is like---"a kind of revelatory logic."

Look beyond the fiction and pay attention to how Stephen has given us a blueprint to help us identify when our thinking patterns have gone askew. It also helps us to identify how toxic people in our lives poison our minds with ideas that encourage us in self-destructive behaviour.

We also see through the interaction between Holly, Jerome, and Bill that the most important thing we can do for each other is make each other know we are valued. That is what strengthened the three of them against the likes of Brady.

And, notice how Brady uses others to carry out his evil deeds----this is a nice metaphor of how toxic individuals are passive aggressive in their manipulation. He sits in a hospital and gets fed, bathed, changed, and medicated (as in, catered to---a trait of the narcissist). And then, he psychically controls others to carry out his plans all the while pretending to be passive. That's how people like that are.

So, it was more than an engaging, suspenseful story. Mr. King, whether intentionally or not, gave his readers a lot of life tips.
