That explains how they're gonna extend it to a full film, it isn't just about the school anymore but the whole town.
It's a nice story. It should have been in Night Shift or Skeleton Crew rather than Nightmares and Dreamscapes in terms of tone. I guess the movie will have to delve deeper into what the children actually are, the story doesn't specify.

....as long as they don’t turn it into a CGI travesty, and keep some of the mystery intact....
I love it when they take the short stories and enhance them , they often come out even better than the written shorts, 1408, Mercy, and especially Riding the Bullet, and Big Driver.
I love how the story written over 40 years ago has crawled out from a creepy old collection to be Seen and Heard in the Now!

There's a Dean Koontz story about a female teacher which is a bit similar to this, called Miss Attila the Hun. In that case it's clearly an alien being taking over people's minds, from adults as well. It has a nice little twist in the last paragraphs - Koontz sometimes has these and sometimes not. I always love when right at the end of the story another new element is uncovered, that's sort of hidden in the story and comes to the fore at the last moment. A sort of 'side-twist'.
There's a shop here I pass often where they sell hand-made porcelain, dolls and dollhouses and such. There is a little old-fashioned schoolclass which is amazingly detailed. I always think of this story when I see it.

This story is like, 10 pages in paperback, how will it be turned into a full length feature film?
If I had to guess which of his stories was most likely to be adapted, this one would have been near the bottom of the list. Like Gerald said, some of the short(er) stories make some of the best adaptations, ought to be an interesting experiment.
