Tom and his brother Ray co-hosted the very popular "Car Talk" since 1977 to their retirement in 2012. The show is still heard, and is popular, in reruns.

The brothers started their car repair shop in Boston. Although 12 years apart in age, they were very close. They both graduated from MIT. Tom got a PhD in marketing. Although they downplayed their smarts and car savviness quite a bit on their show, they were both highly intelligent and knowledgeable mechanics. Almost accidentally, they parlayed their garage business into their radio show where their great self-deprecating humor, car smarts, and common-sense approach won over a huge fan base. (They also have a column that runs in my hometown newspaper every Saturday.)

Tom died from complications of Alzheimer's. He will be greatly missed. Best wishes to his family, friends, and co-workers, who universally loved and admired him.

Thanks for the update and info. I wasn't aware of some of the background. I really enjoyed the show, and their brand of humor when answering some of the questions from callers.

..."Click & Clack"...made the maze of auto vagaries easier to understand for thousands...they were(and in Ray's case, remain)geniuses with a common man's touch...Ray was the perfect foil to Tom's absurdities-and damn, I'm going to miss him....

As a car guy, I will really miss Tom. Their show was a great way to start the weekend, and I still listen to the reruns, too.
I feel bad for his brother. I lost my mom to Dementia on Jan. 1, 2013. You would think we could find a cure for this insidious disease that robs us of our most precious possession: our memories.
The same goes for cancer. With all the money and brains available, we should be able to find cures for things like this. I understand that cancer has many forms, but that is no reason it cannot be beaten.
Where are our priorities?
None of us live forever, but the small amount of time we have should be enjoyed until the very last breath.

My wife and I listened to this show every week when we lived in Belmont, Mass. We didn't have tv for several years and listened to the radio. Really enjoyed this show. Sad that he passed away.
