I'm still new at my job -- I've only been there since the end of May. I work in a business office at college, mostly thanks to my high school counselor liking me so much and putting in a good word! It's also, of course, because of my natural charisma. ;)

I love my co-workers -- they are seriously some of the nicest people I've ever met. The pay isn't bad, I meet new people every day, and I'm always learning something! Also, they work around my classes, so I can't complain. :)

I just retired after almost twenty years as a substitute teacher. I did several different things before working in the area of education. I did day-care in my home, I engraved jewelry by hand, I was a waitress, a companion to an elderly woman, and, long, long ago, a K=Mart worker. :smile2:

I am a carpenter. I've been self-employed now for 25 years...started my 26th year 10 JUL 14. There was this once, this old gray-haired man down in Florida, the orphan Ray Diaz, he tells me, Walter, if digging a ditch makes you happy, dig it. I was trying to go to school...and pound nails...at the time. I do have a degree and I did try graduate school...right after Ma passed away from cancer...but carpentry is something I can do and it does make me happy. Today, I installed nine windows. The other week, this lady gave me a two-grand tip. Heh! I still can't get over that. Installed some windows and a big honking patio door for her...and shutters, to roll down over them to protect them from the winds off the big lake. The old man was a carpenter...too...and in a sense, I did learn some things from him. He's passed on, too...like most I know...me...I'll probably get to work till I die and call that retirement...but you take what you can do and no more. Naps work.
Hi Walt! I like your new avatar!
In Scotland they call carpenters "joiners" (don't ask me why). It is a great trade to be in plus it keeps you active. I remember I took a one year course in high school and part of the year was carpentry. I loved the smell of the wood and using the band saw.

Joiners...my guess it has to do w/the practice of joining wood w/o benefit of nails...or maybe carpenters like to drink and they'll join in anyplace there's an opening at the bar. I like the smell of wood, too. And if today is any indication of my next 25 years...I'm in trouble...ripped open my middle finger on my right hand...immediately put pressure on the wound, walked out to the truck to get the first aid kit...thinking this looks like it will need stitches. Debated about where to go...I'd just been to see the doc earlier, feedback about those spots in the pictures. No drugs, though, other than antibiotics...almost tore a tendon...not quite. First time I needed something more than a gauze wrap and tape. At work. Leisure is another story.

Yeah...got it seen to at the ER. Now I've got this big wad on my middle finger, split-thingy cause of the tendon...nurses and doctors are a hoot...the guy doc is sitting on the stool there, metal prod in his fingers, I glance down and see things best left covered up...they're admiring it, the work I did...the nurse has a grin...doc is commenting how I almost sliced through the tendon...they're both looking at my zippered open flesh...ripped open the top of my finger between the 1st and 2nd knuckle. The other fingers are taking up the slack for it...but...and here's the good part...I can flip people off...'ripped open my finger'...while extending the wad...not that I'd do something like that. :) Thought my tetanus was good, but the last was 2005, so we got the update.

No...no pain really...just a prick when he stuck the needle in to numb the area...that about put me into orbit...just now starting to feel some on top of the finger...nothing serious.
Local anaesthetic into a wound is just nasty-awful... I've almost passed out before with that. :a11: :biggrin2:

You may be in for some of the ouchies when the local wears off--did they give you something to cover that (pain) for the next couple of days?

I didn't love my job last week. Now I do like it again. I am an editor of a magazine and been a journo for the last 8 years. My commute is longer than I would like, but the money is good. However, in some ways I wish I can be a pure reporter without the editor title. I loved my beat. Don't miss the low pay or the weekends and holidays though...

No, they didn't...and the last two or three times the doc carved on me she gave me something I didn't like...I think it was that...I dunno, Lortab, whatever that is. Was happy to get stitched up wasn't thinking about pain...knew I still have some from other things happening but then I recalled it makes me nauseous. I drank a couple beers...I've had worse pain...smash a fingernail...that gets your attention.

Oh yeah, I whacked a finger (pointer) a couple of years ago when I was fixing a gate... smashed it so hard the whole end of the finger pretty much exploded. Goodbye nail... :biggrin2: (Nearly threw up with that one.)
