As some of you may know, my daughters and I make YouTube videos as a hobby. Over the past year or so, we have been lucky enough to become fairly successful at our hobby from a financial standpoint--online advertisers love our target demographic, and we get over 10 million new viewers per month. My wife was able to quit her job last fall and be a full-time mother while I continued working. Starting in September we signed a deal with Disney's Maker Studios.
Our YouTube channel's popularity and revenue has grown to the point where I no longer need to work at my day job. My time is now better spent with my daughters and making the occasional video, rather than commuting back and forth to a job that pays only a fraction of what we're making from our YouTube channel. This was not an easy decision, and not one we are taking lightly, but we feel we are doing the right thing by striking while the iron's hot. I've discussed with my HR partner and boss and I'll be staying through October to assure a smooth transition, but I probably won't stay much longer than mid-November.
Since the SKMB community has been such a large and important part of my life over the years, I wanted to let you guys know about this important step my family and I are taking. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "There are no second acts in American lives." As a 46-year old American, I am going to try to prove him wrong. We are very excited, a little nervous, but confident we've made the right decision. Please wish us luck as we embark on this new chapter of our life!
