Starting with the Universal Monsters, through the 50's sci fi creature features, the 60's Corman/Poe series, the 70's exploitation flicks, the 80's slasher boom, the mostly dry period that was the 90's, through the 2000's and the advent of "torture porn"
What are some of your favorite scary movies and which ones truly scared you?
What do you think of today's horror films?

Don't forget the "Hammer Horrors" from the 60's and 70s. Dracula Has Risen from the Grave is one of my favorites.
Also, The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again. Classic camp horror from Vincent Price!

As for today's horror movies? Haven't seen much in the past 10 years; not much appeals to me.

I LOVE horror movies! I'd have a hard time picking a favorite, but I do find that I go back to vampire movies quite often. Two that I've watched over and over are the original Fright Night and 30 Days of Night. Old movies: Asylum, The Innocents, Isle of the Dead, and of course the classic 1931 Dracula and Frankenstein. Mutants (A French zombie movie) is GREAT in the zombie genre. Home invasion movies scare the ever living crap out of me! The Strangers and Funny Games (both the German original and the almost word for word remake in English) are burned into my brain on a single viewing each.

I'm not a fan of torture porn. It's the easy way out--grossing me out is NOT the same as scaring me. The current crop... eh. I can take em or leave em (most of them). Jump scares don't do much for me, and neither does 'found footage'. I'm always looking for the next good scare, though :)

That's my 8 YO's favorite! He was so sad that it was gone from Netflix this year

I'm a little older, but it is a favorite as well for me. The scene where Lou is pretending to be Dracula and telling the monster "back" then drops the cape and says "He thinks I'm Dracula" is one of the funniest A&C bits of all time. The timing is just perfect.....

My favorite bit:
Chick Young (Abbott): I don't get it. Out of all the guys around here that classy dish has to pick out a guy like you.

Wilbur Grey (Costello): What's wrong with that?

Chick Young: Go look at yourself in the mirror sometime.

Wilbur Grey: Why should I hurt my own feelings?

The kids and I use that line all the time, and laugh every time :)

John Carpenter's The Thing is IMO the single greatest horror film. Period.

Also, I absolutely love 1970s exploitation, not because I hold any delusions that it's good (all though a few exploitation films are, case in point Mad Max and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), but because it's just so enjoyable. For example, in the perennial classic Zombi 2 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters), there is a fight scene between a zombie and a shark ? Who makes this sh*t up ? It's great !!! ;-D

When it comes to modern horror, my general attitude is "meh". There have been some good recent ones though, like "Wolf Creek" which was great. (I count 9 years ago as recent.)

Alien is a great one. Some like the more action oriented Aliens but I prefer Ridley Scott's claustrophobic original. Sitting in a theater in 1979 (or close to 1979) watching the John Hurt scene was a genuine shocker. It has to be one of my favorite shocking scenes. The movie had just been released (I think I saw it opening weekend) and I had no clue to what it was about so I was properly shocked. ;-D I was living in Denver at the time and there were still a few great theaters left that weren't multiplexes. I saw it sitting in the balcony at The Cooper. The Cooper was the best movie theater I have ever been in. I loved going there.

My dad took us to see that. I was 11, and my brothers 9 and 6--lol. My mom just about had a fit when she found out. She shouldn't have been surprised: he did the same thing with Jaws :)

Very true. I've never been a big fan of Hammer. I saw Horror of Dracula and Curse of Frankenstein and adore Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee but can't seem to get into many others. I prefer the Amicus films from that period. Love the anthologies and can't wait for Scream factory's release of Tales From the Crypt/Vault of Horror!
You are so right about the Phibes movies. Vincent Price is great in those. Almost a prelude to Saw.....

Zombi 2 is awesome! One of the best "eye" scenes ever! I like most Fulci flicks with a few exceptions. His plots are pretty much incoherent but who cares when there is a "guts" scene like in Gates of Hell? Like you said, who thinks this sh*t up? ;-D
Agree that TCM is one of the best ever IMHO. While there are a lot of complaints about films like I Spit on Your Grave and Last House on the Left(originals, NOT the remakes)as a female, they never bothered me. Yes, brutal, awful things happen and the scenes probably don't need to be dragged out quite so long but don't they get their revenge? Yes they do! In more brutal ways and well deserved!
Did you like the Wolf Creek sequel?

As for todays horror output I think there have been some decent ones. It seems that there is better indie horror out there right now than studio but I've enjoyed the films of James Wan and Leigh Wannell. I thought the first Saw was fantastic and a great concept. I enjoyed the sequels for what they were, silly fun. I also liked the first two Hostel films. Movies like Insidious 1+2 and the Conjuring had their creepy moments. I'm DYING to see Green Inferno.
Ti West is a slow burn director but he knows how to build suspense. The Innkeepers, The Sacrament, House of the Devil were all enjoyable IMHO.
I believe there are waaaay too many remakes out there right now bogging down original ideas. Like GNTLGNT said, too many special fx/cgi. Get back to the basics of a Tom Savini or Rick Baker!
