Happy thanksgiving Misery! Some poor suckers have to work because it is an ordinary day. Well, we have christmas and easter as many others. Something a bit swedish or nordic at least is one of the most important holidays (its a toss between christmas) is Midsummer It is one of few holidays that is really heathen. Its tradition is way older than christianity in this country. You celebrate the longest day in the year, usually 21-25 June. The christian church made a try to take thkis holiday too (they put John the babtists day on the 24 of June) but here noone remembers anything but the heathen things. You always raise a Maypole and dance around it. The Pole is dressed in flowers and other greenery so it is a pretty sight. It sombolizes Odens, the main nordic AsaGod and his Penis. That is because he has made Freja, another goddess, pregnant, and that is why nature is green again after the long cold winther. So he is honoured. Also, many children and women have a wreath of flowers in their hair during this celebration. A lot is eaten, among the traditional dishes are Strawberries. And a lot is drunken. Probably the holiday during which most people are hurt in alcohol and traffic related accidents. But is, on the other side also the holiday during which most children are made. Party, things to drink, warm outside, easy to sneak away, dancing... . Easy to understand really. There is an incredible silly song song that demands that you jump like a frog arond the maypole but it is done. You are easily sucked into the madness that rules a real midsummerparty. (i can testify). A usual myth formerly was that if you picked seven different flowers on the day before midsummer, made a wreath out of them and placed under your pillow you would dream about the one you would later marry. The night before midsummer was magical. Therefore it was also important that the flowerrs was picked under silence. No talking. You dont talk when you exercise magic, if you do the magic is broken and you wont dream.
Another is 6th of June. That is our 4th of July. But you celebrate your day muvh more than we do our day. We wait for midsummer to get started but then... watch our smoke!!.
