A couple days ago I was watching a bird on the pond I'd never seen before. It kinda looked like a duck except it was white and more than twice the size of the mallards that are commonly on the pond. While I was watching it, a bald eagle dropped out of the sky and swooped down on it. I've only seen bald eagles on tv so I was amazed! and horrified... I don't like those escape or become dinner nature films The bird dove under the water and the eagle flew low over the pond waiting for it to resurface. The eagle attacked again as soon as the bird surfaced but the bird dove back under the water. The eagle flew over to a tree and watched the bird for about 30 minutes before it flew off.
The bird has continued to hang around the pond but I haven't seen the eagle again. Hubby thinks the bird is an aflac duck. I think its a snow goose. I haven't been able to see its beak well enough to see if its a duckbill but the feathers on its wingtips are black so I'm guessing goose.
I wish I could have taken a photo A good camera that takes closeups is still on my wish-list
