I saw some of the pictures and they were horrible.

We had it on and I can't remember a more scary incident to be honest. They, of course, didn't show much during the live broadcast, but after on the news they had some footage. It looked like, at one point, as they were taking her out on the stretcher they were doing CPR. Right on the field/first base line. Glad she is doing better.

At what point do you think something will be done about "broken bats" - hubby and I discuss that he says someone will have to die before they do anything - even so, what CAN be done? What are the options?

A few years ago, they changed the requirements for bats and reduced the incidents by approximately half.

Yes, that's right thanks fljoe0. I guess they could look into putting up additional screening, but then you'll have people bitching about that. Part of the game I guess, but it's a wonder it doesn't happen more.

Nowadays, with everyone looking down at their phone instead of having their eyes on the field, it makes things a little more dangerous. When you have seats in the lower section at a baseball game, you must pay attention at all times. Even when you are paying attention, you can still get hit. (I don't mean to imply the poor lady that was hit wasn't paying attention - I'm just talking in a general sense)

Maybe ushers at the ballpark should tell the fans? I know at our minor league park, they have signs. When we have sat in the lower section of Nats Park, we have never been told - but maybe a reminder would help? Should be common sense etc., but....

Move to aluminum or composite bats.

I think the problem with aluminum bats would be the speed of the baseball flying into the stands. I haven't played men's league softball in 15 years but when I did, the aluminum bats were getting so good that the speed of the ball coming off the bat was getting ridiculous. I'm sure the equipment is even more high tech these days.

I can't remember ever being in a minor league or major league park where I wasn't warned about the dangers (usually on the PA system). I think it's even been printed on the tickets.

If my girls can handle it, these MLB wussies can.

:D

The so-called BBCOR aluminum bats that were introduced in HS and college ball were supposed to be more like wood (the speed of the ball coming off the bat was comparable). You could certainly hear the difference. No more "ping" or at least not as pronounced. My son broke two Eason ones. The inside baffles let go. Fortunately, Eason stood behind their product. At $300 bucks I'm glad they did!

It's uber-dangerous at the minors - you are right there - makes me cringe when I see people with babies down in the field boxes. Crazy

From my observation, the ball coming off the composite bats seems to be even faster and harder. I was talking to an official from the ASA. A new softball has been developed that has less reaction off the bat. It is undergoing testing now and might become standard in a couple of years.

I ask all my girls to wear masks, especially when playing the infield. I’ve had to deal with facial injuries, broken limbs and concussions. Last year I wouldn’t play a pitcher because she refused to wear a mask. Her father complained to the league, who in turn made me play her because it was not a league requirement. Two games later she got a ball to the face and it fractured her eye socket. Her father now requires her to wear a mask at all times.

The price of those bats is crazy. I waited until the end of the season two years ago and got my daughter one at $139... 60% off. I told her she wasn't allowed to grow anymore. :)

When HS baseball changed to the BBCOR bat you didn't have a choice. You had to have the new kind of bat or you didn't.....well........ bat. I asked him why he couldn't just use one of the team bats.........I got the look in return....LOL

The girls give the same look. I refused to get her one at 11, because I had information everything was changing in a year, and what does an 11 year old need with a $300 bat. Then a couple of years ago the ASA required a special logo identification on every bat, or it couldn’t be used in their games. I couldn’t tell you how many parents complained about shelling out between $200 to $400 for the bats and now having to do it all over again because their bats didn’t have the logos. I waited till the new bats came out until I got one for my kid, and only then on sale (Easton).

I played men's softball many years (basically the entire 80s and 90s). I remember we were doing batting practice one weekend (probably around 1990) and someone showed up with a new high tech aluminum bat. We were using aluminum bats at the time but they were the old heavy ones. The bat that this guy brought was 28 oz and before we used it, we were all making comment like, "how can anyone hit with such a light bat?" We started using this bat and balls started flying out of the park left and right (which was a bit of a rarity at the time). Before long, we all had $150.00 bats. All of the fields that we had been playing on quickly became obsolete. ;-D

I remember the first expensive bat I bought. These bats were available at Sports Authority and we didn't have one close (there was no internet at the time either - maybe it was there but no one knew it yet ;-D). I had a friend and teammate that was doing a job close to that Sports Authority so I gave him $150 and told him to buy me one of those bats. When he came back that night and gave me the bat I noticed it was beat to hell. I found out he stopped at a batting cage on the way back and hit with it for an hour. I was so pissed, I was saying, "I can't believe you took my expensive new bat to a freaking batting cage." ($150 in 1990 is probably $300 today)
