I'm going to get to that series after I finish Dark Tower. A few women who's book opinion I really respect have suggested it (including Ms Mod). I'm funny like that - if Twilight or Shades of Gray is on your list of favorite books, I'm not reading anything you suggest.Decided to give OUTLANDER a try, based on Ms. Mod's rec. After that, looks like Atwood's THE PENELOPIAD.
Oh - that's a good one! Enjoy!Started this morning to read Dark Half. I am already 50 pages into the book. This year I made a promise, that I try to

Is it terrifying? I read the first few pages, that hospital scene freaked me the freak out and I put it down and didn't get it. Now I wish I had, because it was at a thrift store for 2.99. But I can't handle the serial killer/pedophile stuff very well. It's too 'real'.I really enjoyed NOS4A2 - I should have asked for this one for Christmas as the copy I read was just from the library. Joe Hill is a very good writer! (Well, duh - it makes sense, doesn't it, Neesy?)
I read and loved Heart Shaped Box, and I'm on the lookout for Twentieth Century Ghosts. No doubt he's talented (and handsome) [oh wow, my back door is locked and somehow the wind or someone just opened it - freaky]. Funny how I love King, but usually his really bad guys deserve what they get and his horror is fantastical most of the time. I can't read Jack Ketchum or Thomas Harris. I did read Red Dragon and yikes! horrifying -those wooden teeth! I'm a big chicken baby. [and I'm totally expecting something frightening at the back door now].Holly...Why don't you read a summary of the book and see if it is something you would enjoy? Joe Hill is immensely talented. This book touches on both of those nerves continuously. My favorite Joe Hill book is still 'Horns' then Nos4A2, his Locke and Key Series, and His Short Stories.
Serial killer stuff usually doesn't bother me, but I can't read most of Jack Ketchum, either. Just too 'ugly' for me, though I did like his western, THE CROSSINGS. Thomas Harris burned out for me after SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I didn't like either HANNIBAL or HANNIBAL RISING.I read and loved Heart Shaped Box, and I'm on the lookout for Twentieth Century Ghosts. I don't believe there's any type of pedophile/sexual thing with kids in the story- the bad guy just uses the kids in a different way. I don't remember it being a very bloody book either- it's heavy on the suspense tho. I would recommend you give it a try. It really is a great story! Is it terrifying? I didn't much care for Hannibal- there's no way that the ending would have happened the way it did, IMO. Clarice loved and respected her father way too much for her to end up the way she did. I liked Rising because it gave us a glimpse into what made Hannibal the way he is, but it didn't make me like him any better. After all, he IS a serial killer!Serial killer stuff usually doesn't bother me, but I can't read most of Jack Ketchum, either. Just too 'ugly' for me, though I did like his western, THE CROSSINGS. I completely agree. It seemed like Harris bowed to fan shippers who wanted Clarice and Lecter together without referencing how he'd developed her character and backstory up to that point. RISING was a written far better, but for me it failed for the same reason that Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN remake failed--he 'killed' his scary character by making him sympathetic. Lecter was more effective as a character when he was a killer just because he WAS. Because, really, how often do we really know why anyone does anything? I liked Mr. King's premise in THE COLORADO KID--that explanations after the fact are largely made up to make us feel better.I didn't much care for Hannibal- there's no way that the ending would have happened the way it did, IMO. I suppose it didn't help, when Harris was writing Hannibal, that Dino De Laurentis and his daughter (who owned the rights to the previous Lecter books) flew to see Harris about once a month to 'review' what he was writing so that they could get ready to film it. Hannibal reads too much like a romance novel for my taste, especially the end!I completely agree. Hi - I read NOS4A2 and enjoyed it immensely and it is the only one of his books I've read so far. That is all I can say right now (no spoilers!) but I think you should give it another try. As far as serial killer/pedophile territory it is not gone into in depth (thank God! ) Joe Hill is a very good writer (understatement)Is it terrifying? I'm almost through Anne Rice's The Wolf Gift, the first book in her Wolf Gift Chronicles series. I must admit I am most pleasantly surprised by it. After having slogged through so many bad books of hers just because I was a fan, I gave up on her. It's nice to have her back to her more reigned-in writing style. Also, she seems to have come up with a nice twist on the old werewolf mythos here. I can't wait to read the second book and hope she continues this series.
Good to hear! I am also glad she toned down the sex scenes (in the first book at least). Some of her later vampire/witch books got so ridiculous with them. The second book is lush in its wordage; I am looking forward to more!
