Luton, England. I lived there for 8 years. It's such a dreary place it's been made official.

can middle class live decent in london? Is it expensive to live in the city?
It would all depend on which part of London you lived in I think, I used to live in New Cross at one time and that was cheap but I've heard recently that it's now a trendy new area so I wouldn't know anymore which are the cheapest places.

The second town I lived in as a kid was a tough place to grow up in. A lot of gang stuff going on and lots of my friends (and their family members-gang related) died during those years. (the kids were killed in car accidents mostly, lots of drinking and driving back then)
It was a small town, so not a lot to do except for sports and drinking afterwards.

Driving through that town gives me a lot of mixed feelings now.

Not so much the location, but the dwelling. A mobile home 'duplex', if you can dig that. Half of a trailer in a lousy trailer park. The entire interior was smaller than the room I'm in now. Bathroom, kitchen/livin room combo, bedroom, all crammed into an area roughly the size of a Chevy Van. Add one plump ex-girlfriend, her geriatric housecat, and all her junk, and I could hardly breathe.

If you were in the bathroom at the right time you could literally hear our adjoining neighbor take his morning dump. All the neighbors were sour, rednecked bastids. All except for the laid-back Mexican family living in another duplex across the way. How they kept so cheery I'll never know--no fooling, there were seven of them in theirs. I'd wanna hang myself.

But, you know, this was way back in the glorious nineties. With the right mindset one could tolerate anything. Om mani padme hum and all that.

Lepplady I'm sad you had to live in your car! (((Lepp)))
Dana Jean Are you thinking of going to London? Maybe you can find our friend Claire!
Kurben I have a friend from Malmo, Sweden - she moved here in the early 90s.
FlakeNoir That's horrible! (((flakeybaby)))

The worst location: Satsuma, AL - middle school, mean girls, huge flying roaches
The worst abode: In 1987, when I was 17 I lived with my ex-husband (19) in a tiny ancient trailer. It was from the 70s I think - mold growing everywhere. We couldn't sleep in the bedroom because of the mold. I was sick all the time. We were just kids, bringing home like $700/month between us, had to eat most meals at one of our parent's homes. Good times!

It would have to be our first apartment in Brooklyn when we came to the U.S.
The apartment building was pretty old, appliances old and filthy, roaches and water bugs everywhere, landlord who didn't give a sh!t, super who cared even less. Previous tenants had a large dog, that's what the apartment smelled like. The apartment was on the first floor facing the inside yard, so it was always dark and we always knew if someone was cooking something or fighting for that matter.

My former coworker was from East London. His Cockney was so bad, I called it Londonese. It took me a couple of weeks before I could understand what he was saying.

I would love to go to London. Someday I will. And hopefully with somebody really fun!
