Hi, y'all -
Been awhile, it has. I've been staying away primarily because I had no desire to bleed all over the board, and there's been an excess of suckage in my life over the past 18 months. But Pat in the Hat is watching out beasties for us while we disappear to go on a dive vacation to Mexico (we leave Monday, and I can't wait to be in , on, under, and around the sea again!), and he has reminded me that I have friends here and should not neglect them.
I'm still fighting with worker's comp, I still can't work -both because of the back injury and lack of appropriate PT and a probable tear to a ligament or tendon in my elbow, from flipping my Sidekick back in February without having a seatbelt on. Yeah, I know.
My mom got sick last October, and died in March. There was a great deal of BS with my brother in there, and I ended up dealing with PTSD again that I truly thought I was past.
This past September, one of my colleagues - a good friend and one of the most stellar human beings I've ever had the privilege of knowing -disappeared while observing on a tuna transshipment vessel 500 miles off the coast of Peru. He was probably murdered by his crew over something that they did not want him to see.
There is a brighter side, though. I'm about halfway through the first draft of a novel about mermaids (sort of; they are not your standard operating mermaids.) And squid people. There's a lot happening in there; the story involves war, racism, life, death, loss, coming of age, friendship, art, stories, and probably a bunch of stuff I haven't even realized yet. I have vowed to finish the draft by mid-January.
Also, while this has, no question, been the single worst year of my life, and while I have struggled mightily with depression and pain, I haven't gone back to dope. And it is everywhere here. So I've got that much going for me, which is good.
I hope you all have a happy holiday, Solstice, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, or, alternatively, a nice day. If I missed anybody, I apologize.
Much love!
