I'm starting The Goldfinch today. It is not a book I would have picked on my own.I tend to be dissapointed by "mainstream" popular books. But so many people( with whom I share a similiar taste in books) have ranted and raved about it that I am going to give it a whirl.

Let me know what you think of it...I've steered clear of that one for the same reasons.

I have it in my TBR pile. Most of the SKMB member reviews were positive.

This book left a deep impression on me. Allow the characters and story to be absorbed as you read it. The ending thoughts speak volumes.

Finished The Daughter Of Time today. Josephine Teys masterpiece in my opinion. Written in the early 50s. A mystery novel writer that died too young. Two other good ones by her is the the Franchise Affair and The Singing Sands. But she is not conventional. The daughter of time centers around Richard III.

Also started Ruled Britannia. The Armada won over the english in 1588 and England is ruled by the spanish. Shakespeare is a main character that called in to write plays but really only want to stay out of trouble which is difficult. Elizabeth has when the story takes place been sittning in the Tower for 10 years. But King Philip of Spain is slowly dieing and his son is not the man he was. Some englishmen begin too sense that their time is coming

I'm curious what you think. I really liked another of her books: The Secret History. I've got The Goldfinch around here somewhere, but I haven't read it yet.

I finished Let The Old Dreams Die by John Ajvide Lindqvist yesterday. The man has a lot of writing talent! Although the contents list a sequel to Harbor and another for Let Me In, there's actually what I would consider another sequel to Let Me In as Oscar (the young boy from Let Me In) is mentioned in another story. I started The Shadows, Kith And Kin by Joe Lansdale last night and have almost finished that one. It's another anthology that has some of his lesser known stories in it. Now, Joe (his ownself!) has some writing skills!

*snore*
I didn't like it, especially since whoever the editor was left typo after typo in the edition my parents and I have passed around. The writing wasn't wonderful, the story was depressing, the ending wasn't tremendous. Overrated, but I'm one opinion in a sea of millions.

If you liked the Secret history you ought to try The Little Friend. Her second book. But TSH is her masterpiece. So far at least. To my knowledge she has only written three books.

Last night I started The Fangs Of The Hooded Demon by 'Geoffrey Marsh' aka Charles Grant. It's the last in the 4 book series featuring a tailor from a small town who is a 'reluctant Rambo'- he travels the world finding rare and exotic items for clients and gets into mischief, sort of like Indiana Jones does.

Reading the American Front. Takes place in a world where the South won the Civil War. Result became two american states. It is now 1914 and the confederates have allies in France and Britain while the United states are allied with Germany. Teddy Roosevelt are president of the United states while Woodrow Wilson is the same for the confederates. WWI is really a World war with an important front stretching across America.

I'd like to read that, too. Makes you wonder how long that could've lasted since Abraham Lincoln (quoting scripture) said a house divided couldn't stand. I bet it's an entertaining read!
