The Damnation Game, by Clive Barker
This is my mostest favorite Barker book!!! I recently came across an ARC of it at a thrift store. Used to have the entire Barker collection but sold them off before I moved. Now I need to find a nice hardcover 1st printing to go along with the ARC.

Reread Lisey's Story and Duma Key. Also reread The Green Mile (read it for the first time in the six chapbooks, which was fun! :) ), read The Girl on the Train and am currently about 650 pages in on my It reread.
And to think that you didn't have to wait each month for the next installment of The Green Mile to come out either.....King made some minor changes when it went from 6 serial books to one single volume.

I didn't know this. Interesting. Were the changes because of inconsistencies or things overlooked in editing process?

I think a little of both. I don't even remember what changes were made. Nothing of major importance. I know by the time he started writing the last volume he was feeling a lot of pressure and that played into it. I loved the idea of him going back in time, so to speak, and do what Dickens did (writing a story in installments and not really knowing where the story was going to go either). Takes a lot of b*lls to do something like that when you're a 'brand name'.

And I remember how frustrating it was when we went into the bookstore the day the last volume was supposed to be released only to find out it was going to be delayed for a short time. Man, we were foaming at the mouth for that last one!!!! It was like the folks in New York City back in the day standing on the docks as the ships came in carrying the newspapers from England with the newest volume from Dickens tale: 'Is Little Nell dead? Is she dead?' the throngs shouted up to the passengers on the ships.

Two books of short fiction: By Blood We Live and Gaiman's Fragile Things. Both are solid, Gaiman's a bit better than the other (probably because there's one writer, not a plethora--lol). By Blood We Live has the one and only piece of short fiction Anne Rice ever published (according to the editor's note, anyway). I hadn't read it previous to this, and like it better than just about everything she's published since Queen of the Damned. :) Nice gothic horror!

She's written three short pieces of fiction: The Master Of Rampling Gate (I think that's the title), October 4th, 1948 and Nicholas And Jean. Now you're going to have to scramble to find those other two.......;-D I'm evil like that!

This is the Rampling Gate story--I really liked it! She lost me (for the most part) after Tale of the Body Thief, but I loved her first books (even her Anne Rampling books were pretty good). I'm going to have to look up the others--are they also from earlier in her career?

Yes, those stories are from very early in her career. They are both available in The Anne Rice Reader- Writers Explore The Universe Of Anne Rice edited by Katherine Ramsland (Katherine wrote Prism Of The Night- The Biography Of Anne Rice, so she knows her stuff).

It's slow going for me, so far. I just started part two and things seem to be picking up a bit. I love Barker's prose, and I know from reading Books of Blood he can really tell a story. I'm just not loving this one (yet).

I am reading Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko. This story is told by a twelve year old boy living on Alcatraz during the late 1930s. It's cataloged as TM but the characters and the situations are solid and I am enjoying it. There are two others: Al Capone Shines My Shoes and Al Capone Does my Homework.

Not much reading getting done since Scott's surgery, but I read The Butterfly Garden, a debut by Dot Hutchison. The kindle version is just $2.00, and I thought it was very, very good. Reminded me a little bit of Silence of the Lambs.

Finished up The Sound and the Furry, the 6th Chet and Bernie book.

Now I am halfway through a reread of Heart Shaped Box. :)

I read the first one and liked it a lot. I posted about this a while back. Is that how you decided to read it?

Ive finished the World in Winter by Christopher, Frankenstorm by Ray Garton and started Supervulcano Eruption by Harry Turtledove. Christopher has written better books but he can write. His The Death of Grass is very good. Garton was a bit meh, actiondriven plot, but not a great writer. Held your interest for the duration though but did not leave a long impact. Turtledove has, as usual, solid research at the bottom but, also rather common with him, spins a few too many threads around the main one. Interesting though.

I might have seen your post, but to tell you the truth, I read so many reviews of books from so many different sources. But I am glad to read that you liked the first book because now I know that I have made a wise investment of time in reading this.:thumbs_up:
