10. The Innocents

"A young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted."

This movie is a masterpiece and has not gotten the recognition it deserves. Gothic, black and white, perfect. Apparently Truman Capote was responsible for 90% of the script. I'm not sure I knew that before, but I watched a little documentary on The Innocents and learned that fact.

I base every single kid performance I ever see on these two children. These kids are brilliant in this. Beyond their years in acting. I can't recommend this enough. Not a slasher film, so if you are looking for that, fuhgeddaboudit. No teen sex.

This is what Gothic is all about.

My signature line here on the board has said many things over the years. Right now, it's an onion quote from Harriet the Spy. But at one time, I had a portion of this movie taken from this quote, (bolded part what I used):

"What shall I sing to my lord from my window?
What shall I sing for my lord will not stay?
What shall I sing for my lord will not listen?
Where shall I go when my lord is away?
Whom shall I love when the moon is arisen?
Gone is my lord and the grave is his prison.
What shall I say when my lord comes a calling?
What shall I say when he knocks on my door?
What shall I say when his feet enter softly?
Leaving the marks of his grave on my floor.

Enter my lord. Come from your prison.
Come from your grave, for the moon is a risen.
Welcome, my lord."

Here is the child actor, Martin Stephens, reciting the poem, creepy:

He was also the head kid in the old version of Village of the Damned)

Pamela Franklin plays the little girl. She was in the movie The Legend of Hell House playing Miss Tanner.

You can watch this full movie on youtube.

#2) Stakeland. I've seen it once before, but I re-watched with my son last night. I forgot how well done it is. My son (he's 12) said: "yes, there's some jump scares, but it's not super-scary."

If you haven't seen it, it's got a Walking Dead vibe, only with feral vampires instead of zombies. And it's surprisingly effective. I think there's a sequel, but I'm not sure that I'll watch that.
Don't waste your time. It's nowhere near as decent as the first one--pretty boring, actually.

2. Necromancy.

Been on a seventies kick but this one fails to deliver. It has some interesting bits but the over all story is lacking. Whenever they need to add info they just do a drugged "this might have happened" scene. With some movies the not knowing if something happened or not works but not this one. Too bad. The premise was interesting. Not even Orson Welles saves it. Points for having the main protagonist share a mushroom with a dead kid though.

3. Ernest Scared Stupid.

Okay it's a comedy but I watched it with my grandkids. I love it for sentimental reasons. My daughter and I watched it when she was her daughters age and now they seem to love it too. And why not? Authentic Bulgarian miak!

6.) Dracula 2000

Re-watch (seen at least six times over the years). This isn't a very popular Dracula movie, but I loved the backstory and the ending - such a unique take on his history and beginning. I'm a bit biased because I have fond memories of watching this with my late husband. We loved the soundtrack (I still have that CD somewhere :smile2: ).

Thank you for reminding me of this movie again Spideyman . :love_heart:

7.) Curve (2015)

Oh my. I'm afraid I lost a few much needed I.Q. points watching this movie. Julianne Hough hasn't perfected her acting skills yet, but she shure is purty. And maybe she was able to endure a lot because of her amazing physique. (Isn't she a dancer? Dancing with the Stars? Never watched it.) The last 20 minutes were fairly good.

1) Gerald's Game
2) Kingsman: The Golden Circle - Neither Horror nor a Romantic Comedy. (see previous posts :biggrin2: ) But I highly recommend this movie to everyone. It is pee-your-pants funny! The whole theatre was in stitches, we were laughing, shouting, clapping, cheering.. it was such a good movie. Brilliant.

Back to the horror...

3) The Bride of Frankenstein - man, I'm so far behind on this challenge.

My 12 year old and 8 year old were in the room with me last night, so I couldn't look for anything harder. Turner Classic Movies to the rescue with the James Whale classic. My kids had never seen it, so I figured last night was as good of time as any. The only problem with it is that whenever I see it, my brain immediately goes to Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, and I just start laughing.

TCM followed it up with The Mummy, but I was way too tired to attempt that one.

11. The Hand

"Jon Lansdale is a comic book artist who loses his right hand in a car accident. The hand was not found at the scene of the accident, but it soon returns by itself to follow Jon around, and murder those who anger him."

Okay, I love The Hand. Directed by Oliver Stone, this is another one people love to hate, but I think it's a pretty good flick because of Michael Caine. Watch this film. Watch his performance. He gives it 150%! He's such a great actor.

I think I read somewhere that he is embarrassed by The Hand, but at the time he agreed to do it, he needed a new garage built onto his house, and he took the job because he needed the money to do that.

And there are a lot of familiar faces for many of us, character actors as the names themselves might not remind you of who they are.

Andrea Marcovicci (a huge presence in 1980s TV shows) , Bruce McGill (another face from TV shows like NCIS, Blue Bloods), Viveca Lindfors (We know her from Creepshow), Rosemary Murphy (another TV and movie character actor), Charles Fleischer (he does a lot of animated voices, but you will recognize his face, at least his younger face. For horror fans, he was in TAles from the Crypt--Demon Knight, he was in one of the Tales from the Crypt TV series episodes and Dick Tracy and many sitcoms back in the day).
