9. Tales of Halloween -- New

"Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents."

This was fun. I love these little anthologies, and this is a 2015 version of those great Amicus and Hammer templates. Showing on Netflix, Adrienne Barbarella (sp?) connects the tales, and there are a number of cameos from familiar faces.

1) Village of the Damned (1995)-Carpenter's remake. I liked it pretty well (FTV)
2) Lights Out (2016)-Nifty little horror movie. This is the second time I've watched this one, and I liked it just as well as the first time.
3) Village of the Damned (1960)-I probably saw this as a kid, but I don't remember anything so I'm counting it as a (FTV). Carpenter's remake was well done, but I liked this one better.

well i managed to squeeze in one more before my trip. i'm trying to do some of these slasher series in order, so Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. not exactly quality, but in order means no skips. they *really* didn't think their story through, especially when compared to some of the other ones. does freddy only get you in your dreams, or does he have full world access? who knows? certainly not the writers. about all you can say about this movie is that unlike other 80's slashers, they totally objectified the guys and left the girls alone. which, my preferences being what they are, i can't complain. ETA: i have in fact seen all these, i'm just doing a revisit, it's been awhile

#2) Stakeland. I've seen it once before, but I re-watched with my son last night. I forgot how well done it is. My son (he's 12) said: "yes, there's some jump scares, but it's not super-scary."

If you haven't seen it, it's got a Walking Dead vibe, only with feral vampires instead of zombies. And it's surprisingly effective. I think there's a sequel, but I'm not sure that I'll watch that.

This I posted in another thread but it was a surprise to me how much I liked it. The name sounded corny but... well here is my take-

I found a gooooooooood one. The Blood on Satans Claw. It is so very Hawthorn. But Nathaniel never had leave to go as far as they did in 1971. This was the era of mixing horror and sex for that titillating R rating and with this one it works well. Perhaps they were going for a Hammer films type of boost but it just so happened to fit with the story perfectly. Wicked youth so warped by the thing upturned by a plow you know that they were ripe for it in that time of wildness just before the age of full reason and mellowing begin.

The thing I like best about it is how it leads you to temptation then horrifies you with where it led you. The main arrow in the Devils quiver is a nubile body. This one hits that target. The Angel in this one is no angel. It takes a while to get going and it seems a bit clunky and disjointed at first but that somehow adds to the strange atmosphere it generates. It works so well as a witch tale it's images linger and not all of them pleasantly. Also it is just so damned odd. Seriously you have to watch it. I'm not sure it doesn't merit a spot in my top ten. Maybe not but it's close. Top twenty at least.

They don't make them like this anymore! I was 10 years old when this came out. I remember seeing ads for it and wanting to go see it but I was too young. I did eventually see it when I got older but haven't seen it in a while. That trailer brings back memories!

3. It Comes at Night (FTV)
Housebound family during a vague plague apocalypse warily takes in another family, only to see their little world torn apart by paranoia. The title claims "It Comes at Night", but no, it doesn't. Nothing comes at night, nor during the day either. Every once in a while I watch one of these horror movies that looks great but seems like it was made by someone who doesn't really "get" horror movies. This is one of them. It seems designed to please critics with its pretty lingering shots of hallways, closeups of faces that must mean something is going on inside the character's heads, and how oh-so-serious it takes itself. But ultimately this is a hollow and pointless exercise that will leave horror fans (and fans of, well, a plot or story) scratching their heads and saying "that's it?" at the conclusion. I give it some points for the quality of the overall look and sound, and the actors did the best they could with a nonexistent story. But I can't think that anyone would want or need to watch this one again--it's shallow, uninvolving and without purpose.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

3. Gerald’s Game. Third viewing, for me. Watched it last night with a friend. She has a strong stomach—she works in the medical field and enjoys it—and the hand scene made us both scream.
 I was kind of writhing on the sofa... scrabbling to get a cushion for my face.

I really do not do horror very well, (Why the hell am I here, right?! I know...) which is why I will be watching romantic comedy and the occasional action/drama for the remainder of the Halloween movie festival.
Yes, I have feelings too... and just want to fit in.

10. The Innocents

"A young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted."

This movie is a masterpiece and has not gotten the recognition it deserves. Gothic, black and white, perfect. Apparently Truman Capote was responsible for 90% of the script. I'm not sure I knew that before, but I watched a little documentary on The Innocents and learned that fact.

I base every single kid performance I ever see on these two children. These kids are brilliant in this. Beyond their years in acting. I can't recommend this enough. Not a slasher film, so if you are looking for that, fuhgeddaboudit. No teen sex.

This is what Gothic is all about.

My signature line here on the board has said many things over the years. Right now, it's an onion quote from Harriet the Spy. But at one time, I had a portion of this movie taken from this quote, (bolded part what I used):

"What shall I sing to my lord from my window?
What shall I sing for my lord will not stay?
What shall I sing for my lord will not listen?
Where shall I go when my lord is away?
Whom shall I love when the moon is arisen?
Gone is my lord and the grave is his prison.
What shall I say when my lord comes a calling?
What shall I say when he knocks on my door?
What shall I say when his feet enter softly?
Leaving the marks of his grave on my floor.

Enter my lord. Come from your prison.
Come from your grave, for the moon is a risen.
Welcome, my lord."

Here is the child actor, Martin Stephens, reciting the poem, creepy:

He was also the head kid in the old version of Village of the Damned)

Pamela Franklin plays the little girl. She was in the movie The Legend of Hell House playing Miss Tanner.

You can watch this full movie on youtube.

And, there is also a documentary, The Making Of on youtube which is interesting.

KURBENS LIST

1. The Blob (the 1988 version).
2. Splinter (2008).
3. The Triangle (2009).
4. Lights Out (2016).
5. Wer (2013)
6. The Skin I Live In (2011) Spanish director Pedro Almodovar in a movie with a good plot (as most of his movies) that is a big drama and a psychological horror. No jump scares, no gore but intensive. Antonio Banderas in the lead as a doctor that loses both wife and daughter in a short time and goes to lengths to create a new female companion. Marisa Paredes and Elena Anoya great in the strong female leads. (He almost always has strong female parts). I really like Almodovars output, one of the best in european moviemaking. Usually does not get so close to horror as this is. Happy reunion of Banderas and Almodovar. He rised to stardom with Almodovar in the 80,s. But i also know Almodovar is not in everyones taste. 4,5/5
