It is at that Doc. Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Merle Haggard, all the older country music never ceases to make me think back to growing up in such a rural area and how good we had it back then living in such a small town. Your home state produced one of my favorite country bands of all time, "Alabama". That is hands down my dad's favorite band of all time. I can remember going out and looking for a Christmas tree with him listening to the 8-track "Mountain Music" when I was kid....not much Rock 'N Roll where I grew up..lolThat's awesome, my dad and I sang and played piano at family reunions but not at Christmas. Family members are supposed to have the best natural harmony. It's funny how a certain song can bring back such detailed memories, isn't it? Thanks for sharing, Ghost.
Absolutely agree. I was just playing "There's No Way" by them yesterday. One of their best songs, IMO. "Dixieland Delight", "Roll On", and a few others take me back to the early eighties and, like you said, the sheer joy and simplicity of life. Many good times and Alabama were like royalty, they still are., "Alabama". That is hands down my dad's favorite band of all time
I think we are close in age and, apparently, have a lot in common with music, culture, family traditions, and Stephen King, of course. It is at that Doc. Most definitely Doc, and your college football team has always been my surrogate favorite since my home state team has always sucked for the most part, especially nowadays...lol. We also share the same name if I remember correctly sir.I think we are close in age and, apparently, have a lot in common with music, culture, family traditions, and Stephen King, of course.
....wonderful memory man, just outstanding.....One of my favorite memories of Christmas is around 1978 or '79. Christmas was one of the few times of year my dad's old battered Gibson guitar would come out of its case. My dad's father was a very good bluegrass guitarist, and had taught my dad to play from a very young age. They were both left handed so they both had left handed strung guitars, my dad's a Gibson, my grandpa's some sort of acoustic Stratocaster or something like that, I don't know guitars very well. Anyway, at family gatherings sometimes they'd both sit down after my grandpa got enough alcohol in him to stop his hands from shaking and they'd play for everyone. They were actually pretty good. Dad would sing, Otto, his dad would back him up and play rhythm. This particular Christmas, I don't know if dad had been practicing or what, but they picked out a very good version of "Driving My Life Away". I always liked to hear my dad play the guitar and sing, he had a good singing voice, but I don't know if it was because dad's voice sounded a little like Eddie Rabbit's or if it was just the fact everyone was having such a good time that day or what, but we were all clapping and singing along with them, about 25 members of the family jammed into the living room watching my grandpa hit every note just about perfectly and my dad seemed to be in his element. My two older cousins and I kept requesting all day that they do "Driving My Life Away" over and over again and I bet they did the song 10 times throughout the day to everyone's delight. That was a fun Christmas.
...me either man, dad always had his truck drivin' style country, Big Band and Jazz.....hell of a combo, but in our house it worked......It is at that Doc. I would sit in the middle of our Ford F150 pickup between my mom and dad and usually drift off to sleep leaned up against my mom on the way home listening to my dad quietly sing along to Alabama songs on the 8 track player.
Mostly old C & W where I grew up. Good example of where I grew up...I had my Van Halen 1984 album confiscated by one of my elementary school teachers because of the front cover of the cassette. You know the pic I'm talking about I bet sir....lol Told me it was the most offensive picture she'd ever seen. I was sent to the Principal's office over it. The principal...hand to God, sits back in his office chair, lights a CIGARETTE IN HIS OFFICE, looks at the album, laughs out loud and tells me to take it home and don't bring it back....me either man, dad always had his truck drivin' style country, Big Band and Jazz.....hell of a combo, but in our house it worked......
At least you remember 8-tracks....curious of how many members of the board we completely lost on that reference...lolThis was me too, only my dad was siging to 8 track Jim Reeves and driving a cadillac.

Can't ever remember another school principal who'd patrol the halls of the school with a Marlboro Red hanging out of his mouth...lol
LMAO...I'd forgot about that wonderful 8-track feature.......nothing like the "clunk" in the middle of a great guitar solo.....
....I had one that would stalk the hallways with paddle in hand, then on break, burn a coupla coffin nails the "lounge".....Can't ever remember another school principal who'd patrol the halls of the school with a Marlboro Red hanging out of his mouth...lol
Remember when the teacher's room door would open and this thick blue cloud would waft out? I wonder how much second hand smoke kids choked on walking by that place.....I had one that would stalk the hallways with paddle in hand, then on break, burn a coupla coffin nails the "lounge".....
