This reminds me of the absolutely appalling murder of two-year-old James Bulger by two ten-year-old boys (please don't get me started on that).

I'm glad the child in this instance is likely to face real consequences for what he has done. If only that had been the case with poor little James.

I read about that today. Horrifying.

I'm pretty sure they do not put children into an adult jail. Maybe at 17ish, but not at ten.

And while I agree an adult could do the same thing, there is more expectation of an adult having the self-control to stop.

I don't think anyone here is passing this off as "kids will be kids" bs. We all think, no matter the age, he needs either treatment or incarceration. But treating a 10 year old as an adult and assuming he has the comprehension of an adult seems unreasonable to some of us.
...no-one is implying he would be incarcerated in an adult prison...here they have to be 18, I'm merely speculating that depending on how it plays out, he MIGHT be remanded to the adult system upon the age of majority and end of juvenile sentencing...

That's possible, if he's found to be competent at that age. I think it's more likely that he'll be permanently committed and studied.

Unfortunately, I remember that horrific case very well. It absolutely shocked the whole of the UK, I can tell you. I literally cried my heart out over it at the time. I've never been so affected by anything I've seen on the news in my life and it still really upsets me even now.

I strongly advise against reading the details of what those two did to that poor little boy. The two monsters who did it didn't serve a single day in jail either, which makes it even worse. It was just the most awful thing imaginable and it's been one kick in the guts after another for his poor family. Our legal system failed them miserably and continues to do so.

Those offenders were detained for 8 years, I think.
They were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released on a lifelong licence in June 2001. In 2010, one of them was returned to prison for violating the terms of his licence of release.

They spent 8 years in a secure children's home. Neither of them spent a day in jail for what they did to James Bulger.

Is "licence of release" like what we would call "parole?"
