Just finished the play and an analysis of it by Francis Fergusson. He finds Be're'nice a tragedy of reason as it overcomes passion. The tragedy of reason is that it must deny passion to uphold the duty and responsibility we carry for the sake of others. This strikes me as the basic tragedy of the romance in 11/22/63, as well as a secondary theme regarding preventing the JFK assassination. Has anyone read the play and seen this similarity?

Sorry.....I've only read Phèdre by Racine. That's nothing like any King work I've ever read.
I appreciate the 'weocomes' and comments, from Dand Jean, Spideyman, and Blunthead. I have not read Phe'dre so I have not opinion on that one. Did anyone else see 'reason' and 'duty' as the primary themes running thru 11/22/63? Or what other ideas did anyone see ?

Lilly Sawyer,
was it conscience or duty to others that compelled Jake, when he sees the consequences of their life together, to leave Sadie alone? In this setting is conscience different from duty? Is it the same conscience (or duty) that forces apart Be're'nice, Titus and Antiochus?
I am not sure I understand the difference. Please, why do you think it is different.

I thought you had seen a difference when you said 'less duty and more conscience' sorry if I misunderstood your meaning.
