Just didn't grip me like the others? Felt the same about Tommyknockers. Believe me, hate to criticise "the King" he's such a large part of my life. Love to get new novel and immerse myself in his psyche. I just felt he had to write it, rather than wanted to.
No problem with criticizing SK; we've all done it from time to time. It's impossible to love everything he's written. I for one did not like Doctor Sleep at all. Couldn't wait to finish it, be done with it and forget about it. Also, I am not a big fan of The Stand, really (believe it or not). So you see, we all have our likes and dislikes. :watermelon:

I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but there were parts of the book that weren't as strong as I thought they would be. The opening scene and introduction to the first main character were epic, but after the climax the story didn't feel as compelling. There was enough to keep me well entertained though.

Welcome. :)

Never feel bad for speaking your mind. We're an open-minded bunch here! I, for one, LOVED Mr. Mercedes -- couldn't put it down. However, I'm not a fan of Firestarter at all and I couldn't even finish Buick 8 so do not feel bad.

Hope you enjoy your time here.

I never ceases to amaze me how a given sK book is this CR's most favorite and that CR's least. I think this speaks not to CR's inflexibility but to the contrary. We're open-minded as a rule, willing to give each of his works a shot, and honest about what we like and don't.

No big thing to dislike something. None of the alien-themed (Tommyknockers, From a Buick 8, Dreamcatcher, Under the Dome) books do anything for me. Doesn't mean they're bad books; it's just that aliens bore me. I'm not afraid of them, not looking for them, I just don't care much about them at all. Everyone probably has a book or two that doesn't float their boat. This is a pretty open-minded crew, so unless you get mean or insulting no one is going to insta-hate you for not liking something :)

I wasn't disappointed with Mr. Mercedes. But that's not to say I haven't been disappointed with a book and stopped reading because I just didn't have that lovin' feeling: Under The Dome, Desperation, The Stand (yeah I know) and IT. I really enjoyed IT but it was too dark with the kids--I hate when kids get bullied by other kids, their parents, or scary clowns for that matter.

Hello fellow no. 1 fans! Was anyone else a bit disappointed with " mr Mercedes"?
Hi Sarah,
At last, someone to agree with!! A bit disappointed? That's an understatement. I was hugely disappointed. This is his worst book since "Insomnia". I just do not understand how true SK fans can like this book (Mr Mercedes)? Predictable, stereotyped, it's like he just wanted to publish a book out of some commitment, with the least amount of effort.

I thought of this yesterday, actually Britt thought of it. He's my partner and supervisor.
I told him how so many people were upset with the book Mr. Mercedes and he asked what it was about. I told him it's the first book in a series of three but the other two haven't been written yet.
He said "Well, maybe that's what's wrong. If you come to the end of the first book and the story's not over because 2 more books have to be written, then I can't see how anyone reading it would expect it to be a "satisfying conclusion."
I thought he was right but then I haven't even read 50 pages of Mr. Mercedes. I'm too preoccupied with other, way more pressing, concerns these days to get any reading done.

I agree with you to an extent. The latter parts of the book got a bit too predictable. Such as
Holly, Jerome and Hodges going to find the ticking time bomb. Once the ticking time bomb scenario was introduced, some common plot devices were used that took me out of the story.

Though some parts of the book were great such as
the introduction to the book and the first parts with Hodges. The hamburger bit was a jaw dropping moment as well.
