That's right beetches, I'm officially a DAR now.

Recap: Sister just got DAR membership with one of our Patriots. I could've used him to also be inducted, but I wanted to prove another ancestor. So, we were going for a certain guy. Now, there is a guy in the line that has a questionable link to my family. We have word of mouth stories that he was not really a member of the family, but a kid my ancestors took in and he just started using the last name. We have no proof of that either way and we can't find a paper trail on this man. I was hoping by submitting this line in the chain towards the targeted American Revolution Patriot, the genealogist would be able to solve the mystery as you have to prove lineage up to the Patriot. Nope. He remains a mystery and my membership was denied because of this guy.

So, we did another ancestor and he sailed right through. So, I am now officially a DAR and I can continue to prove other Patriots as I want to. Establishing and verifying a line of family is cheaper to do through the professionals at DAR than it would be to hire a professional from another source -- so, up to a point, you can get a line established.

In establishing this guy, we had to use a Last Will and Testament. It was a very disappointing Will for me as he owned slaves. He names them in the Will. They were humans beings and they had names. I know their names. Although no last name was given for them but I think they took on the last name of their owner. And as horrified as I was by this, I did take some solace that in the Will, while 2 of the slaves were to be sold, one was allowed to choose which of his children she wanted to go to and whomever she chose was instructed to treat her well.

This part of our history still disappoints and boggles.

Last year I discovered documentation showing my ancestors were slaveholders, too. I shared my findings somewhere on the board. It was disappointing and unfathomable and I could scarcely believe it even though I read their names aloud, names of people who once lived and breathed the same air as I do. However, I'm not one of those people who feel any sense of guilt, or "white guilt" to put a finer point on it, because these are realities that happened over a century before I was born and was (and is) out of my control.
The writer part of me keeps imagining what kind of world these people (slave and free) inhabited. I'm currently reading Up From Slavery and it's one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. Booker T. Washington speaks to the reader as a friend and with not a trace of gall or rancor. He had every reason to be filled with bitterness and hatred but he never assumed a victim role and rose up to be a great man.

No, I don't feel guilt for something I didn't do nor had any control over. I am, however, disappointed that these particular ancestors didn't take the higher ground and say, these are human beings and should not be owned. It was the time, it happened, but there are those who stood up against it and I wish these people would have been part of that group. But, I do have Quakers in the tree, and they were totally against slavery. So, I have people on both sides of the issue.

It is just crazy to me that human beings were bought and sold -- these slaves had to be tough, strong, smart people to survive.

Not unless they're still in the (broom)closet. Oh, wait Tery might qualify as being wiccan but there is a difference between being a witch (white or otherwise) and being wiccan, you know.
Yes, there are differences but quite similar in many respects.

The article below describes how Wicca draws from the Old Traditions of Witchcraft. While this is true, we would simply like to clarify that Witchcraft and Wicca, while simular in many respects, are not the same. One can be a Witch, without being a Wiccan, just as a person can be a Christian, without being a Baptist. Wicca is a recognized religion, while Witchcraft itself is not considered a religion. Thus, Wicca might best be described as a modern religion, based on ancient Witchcraft traditions.

What is Wicca?

I hope nobody will be casting no spells on me, right? :)

I think you've already crossed that bridge. I seem to remember something about stump water being involved. If I was going to cast a spell on you, though, I'd have a hard time narrowing down the choices but improving your grammar would be on the list. Nobody casting no spells? ;;D :smile2:

My uncle went to great lengths to go through the family history and get recognized as an SAR.

He had no kids, and when he knew he was on the path to the Beyond, he passed on his lineage paperwork to his great-niece, my daughter, so she could get herself established, or any of the rest of us. My poor uncle. No one in the family seems to be all that interested.

Maybe someday. It's a bug you catch. All of a sudden, the past is fascinating. Especially family past. I have had the best time solving mysteries, uncovering lives. It is very cool.
