Heck, back in the '70s, I remember watching some game show where a youngster was given a manual can opener and a can and told to go to town. She look at it like it was an alien probe.

I can't say for sure, but is that a device that's had its heyday? We've never had an electric can opener, and I'm not sure if any of our friends do.
A manual can opener is gold in FL- one needs it during tropical season!

Even though we both have arthritis in our hands, we've gone back to the manual can opener because it was such a PITA to get electric ones to work without a great deal of frustration getting it inserted at just the right angle to have it actually slice through the metal.

Will have to check that out--thanks! Should say it was only the electric can openers we had that problem with. The manual one works just fine.

We got a can opener from some Spoiled Cook party that Grandma went to. It's pretty cool.

I'm used to the old ones that cut down into the lid. This would produce a lid with a sharp edge, and in fact, as a kid, I spent the one time of my life going to the hospital (other than the heart attack) to get a knuckle stitched up when a can of cat food whipped my a$$.

This one, though, cuts from the side and lifts the can lid off nicely. No sharp edges.

My cats come running when they hear it because they think they're getting a wet food treat.

My dad was insistent that we all learn to use one of those, just in case :) We have had a normal Swing-A-Way can opener for as long as I can remember. My mom still has the Harvest Gold-handled one she got soon after marriage--lol--and I have a blue-handled one we got as a part of a wedding present (25 years now). They go forever. Never saw a need for an automatic one.

This is what I use to open cans and have for decades.
Mine is white, however, I envy your mom's Harvest Gold one... Harvest Gold, Burnt Orange and Avocado Green - colors I associate with my childhood. :cool2:

And your food is warmed up at the same time--win/win. Guess I need to invest in a wood stove. Might be slim pickings for the canned goods come summer, though. :D
...well it WOOD errrr, would make sense, seeing as how you DO have the wood chippah...and I agree about the electric gizmo of broken dreams and unopened cans...I have to call Tracy to come to the kitchen and operate the damn thing while I stand there more like a doofwad than normal....

Growing up, we had a party line. Do you think kids today could even figure out how to use a rotary phone?

As a boy I would visit dad's people up in New Brunswick and one of the oddest and earliest memories I have is of everyone sitting around the dinner table -- big table, big family, big dairy farm -- and completely ignoring the telephone because it was someone else's ring.
