I was scolded when my then preschooler took his globe to school for show and tell and explained what was happening in the Middle East, preschool version (this was a few years ago--he's in 3rd grade now). Apparently it was 'inappropriate'. Another time I had a mother rush her kids away from me and mine in the library when we were looking at an anatomy book and my daughter expressed delight that the pelvis looks like a butterfly. Apparently pelvises are 'inappropriate' and embarrassing, too? I have nothing but contempt for willful ignorance and treating children like charming idiots.

...well, there's only one thing to do...park him in front of a video game console until he becomes as mindless a numbnuts as the administrators of the "Independent" district...maybe he'll grow up to sell drugs and promote bullying...after all, that's what "normal" kids do right?....perish the thought that the child has an active imagination and thirst to learn...

Well, since the school's not commenting, I can't discount the possibility that the parents' story of the student's suspension is seriously skewed. But taking it at its face, that is a school that needs to take a profound adjustment in its attitude toward learning and knowledge.

as someone who was repetitively punished in school for my imagination and reading interest: I easily believe the news article perspective on the situation.

I went to school one day dress as Draco from harry potter when the forth Harry potter movie was being released, geez as a kid I should have known people would consider me a terrorist if dressed as a magic wizard, there was also the evil not so obviously fiction snakes of slytherin house and "death eaters.

This story made me think of my Ty. I could see him going to school and saying something similar, only with Harry Potter, instead of Lord of the Rings. He is still convinced he is going to school at Hogwarts, thanks to a lovely, thoughtful gift sent to him by our ~Ally~. It was a personalized acceptance letter and class supply list, and tickets to Hogwarts Express. He is always telling people when he goes to Hogwarts he will be learning all the spells!

This is just ridiculous on the school's part. That little boy was only using his imagination. *GASP* Kids just aren't allowed to be kids.

There are a whole series of LOTR games, so this is a great solution! :p

Oh lord. My son took a bone his dad found while working on the job to preschool show and tell and told everyone it was a dinosaur bone found where O.J. Simpson killed his wife. PRESCHOOLERS!

Also, I forget what he took for show and tell, but he also told a group of preschoolers all about Medusa and the snakes in her hair.

A bunch of us girls pretended we were part of an evil Witch's cult when we were tweenies for pity's sake! We had much fun and the teachers laughed at us when we started with the ...Double Double toil and trouble...chanting. I think they had enough horse sense back then to not be worried about political correctedness when it comes to innocent things like this. The young boy does not belong in this school. He is too smart and imaginative.
