I just came upon some Book Club Editions of 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, and The Dead Zone. I know a small amount about them, they appear to be original BCE's from the 70's (Shining has the wrap around cover, etc...). My questions is, are they abridged because I see the page counts do not match up when I look up info on the books? Thank you for your time.

Probably not abridged but the font size is possibly smaller and therefore the publisher was able to add more lines of type per page and be able to cut out some pages to make the books cheaper to produce. So, if each page costs a penny to print and they are able to cut out 10 additional pages per book and then have a print run of 1,000 copies, those savings sure add up.

When I was getting a lot of books out of the library in the past I would choose the "large type" ones because they are easier on my eyes, plus I would find with a new release it would seem that I could get them faster, as the waiting list was not as long.

(Sounds like this is sort of 'out of left field' but basically I am just agreeing with what you say about page numbers - it makes sense!)

Thank you all very much! The font size point does make a lot of sense and I believe I read somewhere that SK doesn't allow his book club editions to be abridged, but I'm not 100% on that and can't verify it. Either way, looking forward to reading these copies, especially The Shining, and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting cheated on anything lol.

Stephen doesn't allow abridged versions. As mentioned, differences in page count are more likely to do with the typesetting. The UK and US editions are rarely the same length for that reason even though the book content is the same.

There are two types of book club editions as far as I know: those that are "run on" with the publishers' editions and are exactly the same. The others, which I believe are more prevalent, are printed separately by the clubs themselves. For cost reasons, they are usually smaller in dimensions and differ in page count. They are never abridged though. It's been a while since my publishing days, but that's how I remember it.

For the actual books I don't believe Steve allows them to be abridged but there are abridged audio versions to some of his books, which he doesn't like at all. I think some of the early audio's of the Night Shift stories were abridged and possibly a couple of novels, but of those titles I am unsure.

I own an abridged cassette version of The Regulators or Desperation, not sure which one it is and i'm too lazy to get up and go to my bookcase.
