Yes, I bought Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter when it came out. One of my favorites. I have not read Smonk yet but loved his book of short stories called Poachers. Thanks for the suggestion. As a librarian I tried to read over a broad spectrum and discovered many great obscure writers this way...many of them from Alabama or Regional.Have you read Tom Franklin from Alabama? She's a good one - very edgy for her time. Not sure I'd call her comic relief, but she's fabulous.

Yeah, that probably wouldn't be my cup of joe but I don't necessarily only read books like Lee Child, Tom Clancy, or Michael Connelly. I enjoy to hear what others are reading and why. Fannie Flagg and Adriana Trigiani are the only authors I've read that technically could be called chic lit, but I met each of them and enjoy the entire spectrum of Southern writers.
It may have only been that they're coming from the Southern perspective but your mentioning Fannie Flagg is what made me think about The Sweet Potato Queens.
I've read the Big Stone Gap series but no others by Adriana Trigiani yet. I didn't realize they'd made a movie about it until I just went to her web site to make sure she was the author I was thinking of.

He's that cat wrote TRAINSPOTTING. Uses a lot of phonetically spelled Scottish brogue that can be challenging at first, but once you wrap yer head around it it's great.

I loved Smonk but be warned that it is nothing like Crooked Letter, so don't expect anything like it.
Have been to Virginia to visit relatives there and was in Atlanta a couple years ago for the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County show. I have a cousin who's lived most of her life in North Carolina so she gives me the lowdown on her perspective of Southern living. Along with what I read here, that's been my primary exposure to the South.

I like Fannie Flagg too.I really like Jean Shepherd and Paul Feig ( esoecially if you are a child of the 70's).
I'm partial to Christopher Moore. I've read and enjoyed Lamb (The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal); Fool; Bloodsucking Fiends; You Suck; Bite Me; and A Dirty Job. Funny, irreverent, sometimes (well, a lot of times) bizarre, but always charming in an offbeat way. Plus, he writes well.
