What a beautiful picture. Thanks for posting :):)

Isle Royale National Park in the big lake, Superior, an island where the longest running wolf/prey (moose) study has been going on for a long time. Currently, there are three wolves left on the island and the moose population has soared, threatening vegetation. A couple three years ago, two or three wolves were found dead at the bottom of a mine shaft--they mined copper on the island, too, way back. Asked a guy who would know how they found their way down there...or couldn't they get out...or what? I don't recall what he explained to me...I think the bottom line was they are not sure. The powers that be are studying the issue and I imagine in ten years time they'll issue their findings, after repeated requests for more funds...which they'll get...and spend...and meanwhile maybe nature runs her course out on the island. There's enough wolves on the mainland, seems like it'd be relatively easy to round up some and transport them but what do I know.

Scott Douglas Hemenway is a photographer I follow daily on Facebook and this award winning photo is one of his best. I asked him to tell me the story behind it and this is what he had to say:

Char, the story is that my buddy Wes and I were downtown shooting some street photos. We saw this dude across the street sitting on a bench feeding birds and strolled over to take a look. It was fascinating as he had the birds climbing on and around him but I didn't want to make a photo of him. One of the things I strive for as a photographer (especially when shooting street) is to capture new photos, not things that I've shot or seen before. There were probably 5-10 tourist around him already taking photos so I thought "There's nothing new here. It's interesting but there's already photos of him being made". I had a quick internal debate about whether or not to shoot this and I went with "shoot it you idiot" and I'm glad I did. I ended up winning 2nd place in an international street photography competition. Only photography related award I've ever won. Sooooooo close to not even getting this photo :)
