I'm unlike lots of members here in that I can't tell when Koontz's being uneven, I just know what I like. I never finished Dark Rivers but loved Lightning, Tick Tock, The Bad Place, and others. What I appreciate most about Dean Koontz is that he was my first "horror" author (he's said he doesn't consider himself a horror author, or any other specific genre of author). He turned me on to horror literature and I love him for that.
...he did a wealth of science fiction early in his career and even wrote some porn to keep the bills paid...he would probably be mortified to hear me say "uneven" but he will let his preaching of the "all you need is love" gospel or St. Beatles get in the way of his story...his sense of humor is wicked though and I truly appreciate that...he's more slapstick to Uncle Steve's stand-up...

I trust you, Sai GNT, and take your word.

...well, I finished AB a few days ago.....I know he was very stoked about how the writing had gone, felt it was some of his best ever yadda, yadda, yadda....I gotta tell ya, for me-it was just a big old MEH...while I found the overall concept quite interesting, the final execution just didn't do it for me.....the ending was rather humorous though....

Koontz' kitchen is another place you'll never be after this blasphemy.....;;D I'm sorry it didn't live up to the hype for you, Scott. I hate when I am stoked about reading a book and then it turns out to be a dud.

Of all the Odd Thomas books, I've only read the first. I liked it a lot. Are the rest as entertaining? Should I read the others?
...yep, I liked em all to some degree...they aren't all "knock you out" titles, but everyone has redeeming qualities...plot ideas and humor are outstanding...and hardly ANY bougainvillea.....

Ha! Ikr? The bougainvillea and exceptionally smart Labrador and character with a disability is like a given with him.

All my life (or as long as Koontz has been publishing in the mainstream) I have wanted to like Dean Koontz. I read Watchers many years ago. Not impressed. I read the first Odd Thomas book. I found it mildly amusing and not at all what I thought it would be; it gave me hope. I haven't read any of the sequels yet, mostly because while I did like the first one, it wasn't enough to make me want to read more. A few weeks ago I started Phantoms and I just cannot get into it at all. I'm not even halfway through and it's been at least 3 weeks! I've read a lot of good reviews about this book. What am I missing?

Maybe try Hideaway? That's my favorite. Super dark story with sharp edges.
