I came across Hop-Frog for the first time in the Arbor House Treasury of Horror. This was the collection that The Crate was published in and Steve wrote the intro. I bought this anthology just for The Crate but found many other good tales in this one. I think it was in 1981 or 1982.

Mine definitely says "flu" when Hop Frog is helping them get ready in their costumes. But at the end, it does say flax. Just a typo, maybe??

Mine says "flu" as well. I couldn't find a definition but, in context, I believe it to be the leavings of flax when it's been spun. It would be dun-colored and fluffy. And quite flammable.

I love Poe and this is one of his perfect stories. Like "Fishhead" it is as precise and quick as a scalpel. Gets in, sets up the action and gets out, leaving us horrorstruck and laughing. Laughing because it is the blackest of black humor. I hope those two dears found a safe place to live and did so happily ever after.

Did anyone else picture Tyrion Lannister as the dwarf? Ha, even down to the wine (but this story's dwarf, Hop-Frog, drank against his will).
No, I went further back. A great actor in Wild Wild West and one of the players in the episode of Star Trek where Kirk kisses Uhura, Plato's Stepchildren. If you watched how he kind of hopped along as he walked, he immediately sprang to mind. Good story. Very fairy tale.

Michaelito Loveless!!! Brilliant character actor Michael Dunn. He's who I thought of, too.

...same thing I did and the reward was, as you say, a bunch of other great tales...
