I agree with everyone's great insights and comments. Joe always has multilayered ideas playing out to contemplate.
His easy going style and descriptive word choices and phrases just make him one of the most skilled story tellers out there. I love the way he writes; I love how he just pulls you into his worlds.

This story left me sad. Many times I didn't know where he would go with it. Can't say that I enjoyed the ending as a person but, as a reader, I did. Does that make sense? I liked the lead character even though he was deeply flawed; he was very real. I enjoyed the story but it left me a bit empty.
Back to Uncle Steve next week. I pick Under The Weather for next week's discussion.

I have read this collection before but not for a long time so it felt new to me. Definitely a sharp turn at the end. Agree with what has been said about Joe's skill as a storyteller. Pulls you right in and anything is possible.

Just throwing this out there:
How many of you thought she was talking to the brother?
For some reason, I think it is implied that she is talking to the brother on the phone. Talking about his studying. And she knew about The Cape from their childhood and he wants to know when they talked about that. She gets very evasive.

yes,,felt she was talking to the brother on the phone-- absolutely that vibe.
I thought that, too. Maybe he did as well, which is why he dropped her.
