Hello to all, First time I have EVER tried to contact an author or anyone famous. Never even called a talk show but am COMPELLED to write this. Am a constant reader for a loooooooooong time. Just got around to reading Duma Key and am stunned at the parallels in my recent life (past 2 years) Met Charles 2 years ago. He's going blind. Just had his right eye removed due to retinapathy incurred when he was given too much oxygen as a newborn. He has become my mentor and closest friend; very similar to Wireman's relationship with Edgar. In fact, so similar that I get flashes of conversations I've had with Charles that are eerily close to Wireman's and Edgar's. Have just gotten to the point where Wireman gets his eyesight restored. Am hoping that my two protagonists enjoy a positive resolution but am not optimistic. The imagery SK paints (pun intended) blows me away!! I'm a special ed teacher and use SK books in my high school classes; usually have to get administrative and parental permission to do so but his books have sparked a fire in some who were loathe to read previously.

It was a lovely book, wasn't it? You're a fortunate person to be allowed to teach from Mr. King's books--it would never fly here, and that's too bad. He has a lovely grasp of evocative language (even when you strip away the curses--lol) that fires the imagination, and an ear for realistic dialogue and characterization that's near unmatched. Plus, he's a particularly moral writer--many good lessons to be learned. Perfect for young people.

Welcome!
