You saw the fat mustached guy? I love you Sundrop! It's probably an optical illusion, but still. Could you see the woman in the dress with your bare eye?
The photo was submitted to two "experts" for testing. One a believer, the other a skeptic. They both confirmed that it has not been altered or tampered with. (in fact, no one has ever changed it in any way until danie drew the yellow outline on it here).
Both also agree that it is not a reflection of a flash....No flash was used, btw. It was taken with a digital camera, so there is no film to offer a double exposure. They also found it odd that the bars don't cast a shadow on the dress. They both agree that the images cannot readily be explained.
I didn't see the woman until I downloaded the photos on the computer to view them full size. I had just come out of the room to her left.... to me, it looks like she's still halfway in the room. It took me a lot longer to see the man.
I have three other odd photos from that tour, but I think I'll keep those between me and the folks who examined them. Even the skeptical one was a lot kinder in his judgment of them than some here. ♥

I guess you’re referring to me as being unkind. If you’ll look back at my post, I said the human mind is a gullible thing, not you, and not Scott, nor anyone who believes as you do. I stated a fact—the mind often believes and sees what it wants for so many reasons, even when facts say otherwise. It’s funny that you think I was judging you, then immediately judge me as unkind for a simply stated fact of the human brain.

Is it so hard to admit we’re gullible beings? I have talked myself into different things many times because I so wanted to believe it to be true. We’ve all been gullible at some time, especially in our youth. I meant no offense to anyone by stating a fact about being human. That shadow in your picture could be anything. If I base my belief on ghosts based on a picture (or hundreds of pictures), then I might consider myself over-trusting and not very scientific. I will continue to judge on facts only. Since you have no proof of ghosts existing, then I’ll still be on the side of skepticism, but I will gladly be a believer once fact-based truth is shown to me.

Again, I meant no offense and I’m sorry if I caused you to feel bad or offended. ❦

Will do! I'm in the middle of a horrible storm here, and using the stupid phone. As soon as the storm passes and I can use the computer, I'll send them to you.

Okay, I'm not finding an option to attach a file to a PM. Would you have an email address that you can PM to me?
I'll email 'em to ya! ♥

I've always loved monsters and the horror genre since I was a little kid, but purely for entertainment value. I'm not into the whole "seeing Jesus' face on my toast" sort of thing, but I do have a passing curiosity in stuff like Bigfoot/Loch Ness/UFOs, etc. I don't consider myself superstitious, nor am I an outright sceptic. I do try to keep an open mind to the possibility of something out there, although I'm quick to dismiss gimmicks and charlatans.

Just thought I'd lend a little context to my story here, since this seems as good a thread as any to share it.

This June will make two decades since my father passed away. I'm a Hindu, although not particularly devout (so if you have any questions, check Google first ). Anyway, part of our belief is that after death, the soul is bound to this terrestrial plane for ten days until the family completes certain rites to give it a proper send-off. Another thing I should mention is that Hindus are cremated using (among other things) a type of pine-wood for the pyre that gives off a sweet scent when burning.

When my dad was alive we had a large black Alsation named Axl. Axl had this very specific way of greeting every one in the house. With my dad, Axl would stand on his hind legs and place his paws on my father's shoulders (my dad wasn't very tall, so the dog would dwarf him), flatten his ears and wag his tail like crazy.

A few days after the funeral, I came downstairs to start the car. It was an old car inherited from my father, and I would have to warm up the engine (for at least five minutes) before I could drive it anywhere or the sucker would conk out. So I'm sitting there in the car feeling despondent and not really wanting to go to work, and a few feet to my right my peripheral vision catches the dog near our orange tree. I raise my head and see Axl with his back towards me and he's standing on his hind legs. I thought what the hell is he doing, trying to climb the damn tree? Then I realise he's nowhere near the tree. This huge dog is standing on his hind legs with his front paws up in the air, ears flattened, tail wagging like crazy and making whimpering noises, but not in a scared way or anything. He did that for five minutes (I know because that's how long I warmed up the engine for). I glanced away and when I looked back, the dog had dropped to his legs and walked away.

The weekend after my mom and I were watching TV upstairs one afternoon when we got a strong burning scent in the house. We live in an old house so I jumped up thinking there was an electrical short someplace. I checked every outlet in the living room, but nothing. I left the living room and checked every other outlet, still no problem. I come back in the living room and my mother is confused as heck because that smell is hella strong. I walk out through the front door and no scent. I take two steps back inside, and the smell is still there. I check everything that's plugged in downstairs, and there is no problem. I walk back up the front stairs and my mother is standing outside the door. She tells me to step inside, and the smell is there. I step back outside and no smell. I'm freaking out now cause the last thing I want to do is fall asleep later that night and wake up in the middle of the Towering Inferno, y'know. So we both sit back down on the couch and this darn smell won't quit. And then she asks me "You don't recognise this?" I said, What? "The smell. You know what that smell is?" Then it hits me. It's the smell of the pyre burning.

I didn't think too much of those incidents at the time until I was talking to my sister who lives in Florida. Around the time I had those odd experiences, she also experienced the burning smell in her house and she didn't recognise it. Her husband (who is a deeply religious man) did, however.

Sorry for the long post, but reading this thread made me think about those things and I guess I just had to get them written down.

I'm largely a skeptic, but that that photo gets creepier every time I see it. The dress isn't a bag of rags or a big washcloth. It's something else. I saw the face immediately. It doesn't scare me so much, but it makes me want to run outside & yell, "Go away & get the hell out of here! I've got holy water!!!"

You don’t know that as a fact. Only Sundrop could say what was there. But even if there was no rag or washcloth, we’ve all seen photos with shadows that we didn’t see as the photo was taken. Or our finger was partially blocking the lens. Or thousands of other explanations.

Looking at that picture I just don't see a woman in an antebellum dress, I see the light switch there on the wall, the shadow could be anything. Looking at the Charleston SC jail site, you see it is famous for alleged ghost sightings in fact they had that ScyFy tv crew team there, I'm not meaning to throw cold water too much, but I just don't believe there is anything to it that couldn't be explained if attention is paid when taking the photos.. just my opinion, happy that others can see what they want to see, which is cool too..

You weren’t much fun at slumber parties either!;-D

I’m always happy that people believe different things too. However, if one puts one’s beliefs out there, expect someone else to challenge it.

Well, guys didn't really have slumber parties but we did do ghost stuff, I remember when we would peel grapes and make kids entering the haunted house touch them and tell them they were eyeballs.. and of course all the other stuff that kids do, all harmless good fun but frankly I can't say I ever had any of these kind of experiences..

I have to admit I didn't like the way this thread was heading, it seems like it is getting personal or people are taking things too personally. I am hoping we can all agree to disagree and still be the same friends that we have been for years here. Just because someone sees something or doesn't see something doesn't change any of that, that is our shared time here.. who knows we could all be wrong here, and maybe that is just Elvis's ghost..;)

Perhaps you'll want to look back at my post. The entire thing is about photographs. I never stated nor implied that you or anyone else had been judgmental of me personally. I said exactly what I meant.....that the skeptic had been kinder in his judgment of the photos.
Maybe you misread the post, or misunderstood it.

Is it so hard to admit we’re gullible beings? I have talked myself into different things many times because I so wanted to believe it to be true. We’ve all been gullible at some time, especially in our youth. I meant no offense to anyone by stating a fact about being human. That shadow in your picture could be anything. I find definition of the word gullible to be slightly insulting.
gul·li·ble
ˈɡələb(ə)l/
adjective
adjective: gullible
  1. easily persuaded to believe something; credulous.
"an attempt to persuade a gullible public to spend their money"
    synonyms: credulous, naive, overtrusting, overtrustful, easily deceived, easily taken in, exploitable, dupable, impressionable, unsuspecting, unsuspicious, unwary, ingenuous, innocent, inexperienced, unworldly, green;
informalwet behind the ears, born yesterday
"he was a swindler who preyed on gullible elderly widows"
Because I have a human brain, I did and do take some offense to the statement that we're all gullible. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong, and have been wrong many times....and will no doubt be wrong again. I also have no problem with someone disagreeing with me. I love a good debate, but I'll stop short of insulting my opponent's personal beliefs. I'm not trying to make you believe something that I believe, so please don't dismiss my beliefs as gullibility. I could also argue that you have no real proof that ghosts don't exist.
Since you brought it up......I don't think that drawing on someone's photo and referring to the image as "the headless dress lady" is reflective of kindness, and that did bother me a little bit.....not that you don't believe it, but the fact that you were so sarcastic in your dismissal of my photo and my belief of what it is to me.
Again, I meant no offense and I’m sorry if I caused you to feel bad or offended. ❦
Thank you for the apology. I do appreciate the validation of my feelings.
......I mean that sincerely, not sarcastically. I'd offer you a hug but I don't think we're there yet :encouragement:
