At my son's birthday party (he's 16) the kids were all sitting at the table eating pizza and talking about school. Somehow, the topic of IEP's came up. IEP is an Individual Education Plan. It is a written form of what specific things are required for an individual in school. They are provided for kids with learning disabilities and differences.

So, one of the kids asks who has an IEP, and all but one kid raised their hands. So they all turn and glare at the one and (jokingly) treat him like the outsider. It was really funny.

So, they all start asking each other why they have an IEP....and it ranged from learning disability, to gifted, to Tourette's. And the conversation ended as one of the boys was running around hollering "Dyslexia for the win!!!"

Gotta say, I love that my son and his friends are not ashamed of their differences. Most of this group have been friends since they were 4, so they know who was withdrawn for support, and they don't care. It was never treated as a negative when they were in school. One kid needs glasses to help him see. Another needs to work one-on-one twice a week with the resource teacher. It is what it is!

Shlomo Moussaieff is regarded as one of the world's top private collectors of antiquities associated with the Bible and ancient Near East. In childhood he had dyslexia and was unable to read and write.

Maybe dyslexia is compensated by the other special abilities of brain? I think that the word 'dyslexia' is a key-word for secret elite. But that is a mere inference... By the way, in the novel "1Q84" by Haruki Murakami dyslexia is a part of mystery.

Becky is smarter than the average bear. It is just a different way of learning. When Becky was diagnosed, the psychologist that tested her was also dyslexic too.
My son is also very smart. So smart, he fudged the tests in school in 5th grade when they were testing him for dyslexia as he didn't want to be pulled out for any special services!
