Mom said she was in labor for 20 hours with me and I said, "20 hours? Mom, you had time to drive to West Palm Beach, why did you let me be born in Fort Pierce?"

When I used to come down here in the 80's, natives were still a rare breed, especially down south. Seems like a lot more life-timers here. Maybe it's just spending more contiguous time here now. When I was in high school, there were less than a thousand people in Port St Lucie. I lived in Stuart and Port St Lucie was just the woods between Stuart and Fort Pierce. I-95 between Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach was not completed until the early 80s. The difference between now and when I was a kid is astonishing.
Martin County had a section of I-95 completed for years that wasn't connected and was a rumored landing strip for drug trafficking. If you watch the documentary Cocaine Cowboys, you will hear the pilot in the doc talk about landing his planes on that strip of interstate. He doesn't mention the town by name but I knew exactly what he was talking about.
