I didn't know Tolken was South African! And I have read The Hobbit...don't recall if I read more. I'll have to look for Wilbur Smith. Thank you!
Tolken is South African, although I think he left this country in his twenties.Still makes him South African in my books!Wilbur Smith is an absolute legend in our country,he was once on the best sellers list, you have to look him up.Any other American authors you would recommend if one loves Stephen King?

Elmore Leonard...John Steinbeck...Charles Willeford...there's so many. John D McDonald...his stories before he began writing the Travis McGee stories are all well-written and he nails character, motivation, personality. He was a writing machine during his prime and his prime lasted a good many years. Cormac McCarthy...Daniel Woodrell...Matthew F Jones...Harry Crews. Those are some of my favorite story-tellers. Vonnegut.

Behind you
Tazz, I just think we all just had a communication breakdown. We are all good people here, but some of us have been here a long time and kid each other. I am sorry if you did not feel welcome, because you most certainly are.

I really don't think you actually offended anyone.

It seems like it to me:(
We're used to each other and sometimes overlook the fact that a noob isn't used to us yet. I do think that in America, and maybe lots of other places, the idea that Stephen King is mentally ill is atypical. I'd not heard that one, but I have heard that some people assume he's a Satan worshipper. He's not, of course. He's just a fiction (mostly) author whose subject matter tends sometimes toward "horror" and "the supernatural", as well as other genres which are almost of his own creation. He's a nice, sane man, who sometimes writes about horrible things in order to help his readers and himself deal with life's real horrible offerings.

Here is a quote from his IMDB bio:

"Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, at the Maine General Hospital in Portland. His parents were Nellie Ruth (Pillsbury), who worked as a caregiver at a mental institute, and Donald Edwin King, a merchant seaman."

Maybe somebody read that and took it out of context. I know that when I told a lady at work (who is somewhat religious) that I liked to read Stephen King's work she said "I hate him", which I thought was a bit weird. She was simply going by his reputation from the 70s and 80s.

Even another girl whose opinion I respect said she did not read any of his stories because she did not like gory things. She is an avid reader so I think she's missing out on a lot of good stuff!

Many of his books are not gory at all - Joyland, and 11/22/63 come to mind, as well as one he wrote for children called
"The Eyes of the Dragon".

You probably know this, but he wrote "The Green Mile" and "Shawshank Redemption" - both were turned into very good movies.

Oh yeah - and what my avatar says about being "Annie Wilkes' first cousin" (shudder) - that was just a silly joke. I recently reread "Misery" and that woman was pure evil! :icon_eek:

Hello and just know that Giant DOES have mental problems. He also farts a lot. :p

The mental issues which you thought were being attributed to Mr. King were probably meant towards his staff. Primarily the office staff. Primarily one named Marcie or Mandy or something like that. :)
...pay no mind to this particular member...he fancies himself a defender of the body politic and all-around pie raconteur...but in all reality, he's crazier than a sh*thouse mouse...

I do apologise sincerely.I can certainly appreciate someone who has read Stephen Kings books for 35 years.I was not trying to attack Stephen King,I was curious as I have heard many stories regarding Stephen Kings mental health.
