I've been a huge King fan for about 10 years since I was 13, however I never got around to reading any of his books until I was about 19. My first King book I tried reading was Cell when it first came out, when I was 14, and couldn't finish it. Then I gave Misery a shot and also couldn't finish it (though I pretty much knew the movie by heart). THEN, I bought Cujo when I was about 15 and STILL couldn't finish it. I was always into teen series like Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket and Darren Shan, so I think King's style was a little out of my element. When I was 19, I took out The Shining from the Library and read it in a few days. Wow, what an amazing book that was. Since then I have read (not in order) Carrie, Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary (my personal favorite), The Gunslinger (read it in a day), Drawing of the Three, The Wastelands, and The Green Mile. All great books. I own A LOT of King books that I still have to get to: Dreamcatcher, Joyland, The Bachman Books, Skeleton Crew, Duma Key, Blaze, Everything's Eventual, Wizard and Glass, Insomnia, The Dead Zone and The Stand Uncut Edition. I tried Insomnia, got about halfway, but stopped. I've read a bit of each, here and there, but I think I got overwhelmed.

My goal right now is to get through The Stand, especially now since they're making a 4 movie series on it. I've gotten to about page 400, reading 50 pages a day, but I got burnt out. I LOVED the book so far, but I din't have a lot of time with reading, so the days went on and on and I forgot where the characters were at after a while. My new goal is 10 pages a day for 5 days, then 50 pages the 6th day, leaving my 7th day to take a break. I know it seems like I'm thinking of reading as a chore, but really it's not. I get way too much into books and I'm a pretty slow reader, so realistically The Stand would take me about a month if I read it all the time. It would burn me out in a few days. I need to pace myself. Not only that, I'm a huge gamer (RPG's) and work 2 jobs, so I think 100 pages a week is a great goal and I would finish by the time March comes along.

Anyway, I'm glad to finally be a member here. I'm eventually planning on reading all of King's books, since I've come to love his style. It's like listening to Dream Theater...usually long and bloated, but 100X worth it when you're all done.

A few questions I have for you is that I know TDT series (which I'm planing on starting over and reading all of it) combines a lot of his works. Is it safe to say that all of his books are in the same universe? Also, I was thinking of starting fresh with Carrie and going in release order. Would that be a good idea? Do his standalone books have any overlap that is worth reading them all in order? Or can I just pick any order I like? I'm just a bit confused on how his bibliography overlaps and ties in with each other, that I want it all to make sense when I finish. Thanks.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm happy to be here and happy to meet you all.

...first, VERY little of King is "long and bloated" you may want to re-visit that churlish term....

-The Dark Tower does NOT combine a lot of his works....it is the lynch pin of his Universe and aspects of many/all of his novels revolve around it...also there are many "crossovers" within his novels-references which we term "Easter eggs"...they are fun to look for and savor...going in release order is a good idea IMO, and do the same with the DT series...and there are a ton of "Universe" references available....Rob Firth's being the absolute best...one other thing, this website is an invaluable resource...

Welcome - working two jobs is quite admirable but maybe try to drag yourself away from the games (if possible) so you have more time for reading? :m_game:

One thing in your favour - you are young! 23 years old (sigh) - time is on your side!

"It's like listening to Dream Theater...usually long and bloated, but 100X worth it when you're all done."

Yeah - like GNTLGNT says - not too flattering. Read for pleasure and because you get so immersed in a book it is hard to put down. I can't say I have ever approached reading as a job I had to get through!:m_thinking:

Glad to meet you all! What I meant by "long and bloated" was that I've noticed that King sometimes goes off the beaten path a few times, especially in his longer books. When I was reading Salem's Lot, I felt like it could have been about 50-100 pages shorter. Similiar to Dream Theater in a way, where songs like "The Great Debate" could have been fine being a little shorter, but at the same time, I wouldn't shorten the song by one second. King's books usually have the same effect on me.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy being here! I wouldn't worry about the order. Just read what interests you first.(except you have a good start on the Dark Tower Series, read a series in order! Ha, of course you know that, I am sure!) I am 37 and still trying to get through all of his books! We all have limited time, so setting a goal is good. You have a good start on his books.

Welcome. For me reading has been an escape, not a chore. Kings books can be long, but I thing the extra bits add to the seasoning of the story. There is a little SK universe where sometimes things from other books get mentioned or make a small appearance. I love that. Welcome and have fun.
