Hello!
My name is Melissa and I have been reading Stephen King novels since 1993, when I was in junior high. I was always an avid reader and had gotten bored with R.L. Stine books. Someone recommended Stephen King to my mom as something I might like. Had she read them, she would not have passed on that recommendation! I still remember my first book, Tommyknockers. I picked it from random from the King books that were on the shelf at the library when I went. I remember walking to the library with my friend a few weeks later on a summer day, reading as I walked because Tommyknockers was due and I hadn’t quite finished it yet.

I am a librarian by trade. I work in a medical/academic library (we serve the nursing college and the hospital). I really love my job, though I miss the public library. I have 4 children living and one who has passed. We are busy trying to raise our family, pay the bills, and keep our sanity! I was born and raised in Quincy, a little river town.

I think my favorite King books are a tie between It and the Dark Tower series. I read It when I was in high school. I had a habit of staying up late and reading, then being very tired for school the next day. It was the only book that scared me so bad I had to quit reading late at night. I still sometimes get the eerie feeling I am going to open my eyes in the bathroom and see blood everywhere. That book stuck with me all these years. The Dark Tower series is just the best non-scary but still supernatural series that I have read. I guess my next favorites would be The Stand, Firestarter, The Shining, and Carrie, in varying orders. I also love his newer stuff, like Lisey’s Story and Duma Key. They are all so good! Each and every one I read leaves me wanting more and are all good in their ways. And I have always really enjoyed his short and not-so-short stories.

I was really hoping to go to one of the tour events in Kansas this November, but my daughter turns 1 that month and I don’t think we will be able to go. I keep hoping that someday I can meet the author who introduced me to adult writing and changed my life! I had read other big books before Stephen King, but mostly classics and other works that were still tame (like Little Women and Jane Eyre: books for adults back when you didn’t cuss or have sex in books). Stephen King showed me the big world and scared the hell out of me, and I have still never gotten enough of it.

Anway, nice to "meet" all my fellow fans!

I've lost a child myself so I've been in that deep dark hole. If you do a little searching on SKMB you can find out about Jamie.
Welcome home!
