That's all well and good for folks who actually get a tax refund, and have storage space available for buying in bulk.
Unfortunately, I have neither. I kinda feel like I'm being preached at, so I'll exit this thread. I didn't ask for or want advice, and I certainly wasn't whining about what I have. I was only stating what my personal experience with the broken system has been. I know how to manage what I have.
It took a lot for me to actually admit that I've used public assistance. This just made me feel worse.
Aww Sunny, I doubt skimom had any intention of this--she would be horrified if she thought she'd made you feel that way.
Please don't feel bad for having needed or accepting financial aid, I understand how it feels to be in this position too...

I grew up on welfare - my mom was a single mother with three kids. We were on food stamps, fuel assistance and all the other "assistance" we qualified for. We lived in low-income housing when we weren't staying with my grandparents or in between other places. I remember getting free lunches at school and being horrified because the punch cards were a different color and the other kids knew how poor we were. In the third grade, I told a friend that all the light bulbs in our house burned out - the power was shut off because my mom couldn't afford to pay the bill. I went to thirteen different schools by the time I was in the sixth grade. My brothers and I got free Christmas gifts from the community drives. I understand poverty. I think these celebrities could be doing a whole lot more than playing the "poor game" for a week.

Sunny, I don't think it was anyone's intention to make you feel bad about using assistance. I applaud you for your honesty. You have nothing to be ashamed of or feel bad about, nothing.

Oh my gosh, I never intended that at all. Cry pardon, Sundrop . I was just talking about MY experience. Everyone and every situation is different. I'm out of here.

Sunny skimom2 is the last person in the world who would hurt your feelings. She was only talking about what she does to save a buck. She good peeps and you are, too. I grew up very lucky with foster parents. I had fresh milk....we had cows. I never knew what it was like to go without. We grew most of our food and it was plentiful.
Since I started getting cancer and complications, things have not been easy. Going back to work is not going to happen so I am seeing a bit of rough now myself. I am luckier than some though. I know many people who had to take advantage of services. I went to classes in college with single mothers who had to use the foodbanks and other agencies. This is no shame at all. I admired them very much. To be honest, I find people who have undergone hardship to be much more interesting than folks who had things handed to them.

If she said....this week I eat $29 worth of food. The other $XXX that I usually spend on food will be donated to (soup kitchen, or something) I could see this as a good thing. I still wouldn't believe she'd eat just that amount...but at least something good would be coming out of it.

oh, Sunny.... you can only ever judge someone on what you actually know about them.... and we adore you. You're compassionate, brave, witty and inspiring. You're worth 1,000 Gwyneth Paltrows. I love you.

I wish supermarkets would always have a Help Someone In The Community Non Perishable Food Table set up when you enter. Whenever they do I make sure to pick up spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, two cans of vegetables, and some cookies, and put the bag on the table after checking out. I figure it’s a whole meal for someone and costs me less than $5.

We have them here and you can actually by a bagged item of groceries for that price. They have the packs with the sorta items you mentioned in them.

How can someone so together and talented like Blythe Danner have such a yoyo of a talentless daughter like Gwyneth Paltrow? That's the real question!

Did you ever see Blythe in that showtime show called Huff? She was great in that. I don't think the show was very popular but it was good. I happened to find the series on dvd for a buck and that's how I got introduced to it. There were two seasons and it is worth getting to watch Blythe and Oliver Platt (as the attorney who took his partying very seriously ;-D)

No, I never saw it but heard good things about it. I'll have to check it out. I loved her on Will & Grace and in countless other TV shows and movies dating back to the 70s. She's always had a very demanding presence whenever on screen. And that voice!

That's a great idea. People aren't just hungry at Christmas.

...RE: Sunny...she and I are friends and I know how proud she is...none of you said anything inappropriate or mean-spirited, I think there was just a chink in the armor of her psyche that day...you have all said very good and reasonable things here, and expressed your caring for her...if she reaches out to me, I will let her know...otherwise I will respect her privacy and ask you all not to think harshly of her...

At one store, I think it's Metro, they have the bags with some dried goods, canned veggies, all or most no name products, and cheaper in the bag than to buy them individually. An older lady bought a bag, along with some fresh fruit and meat, and was adding the pre-bagged stuff into her grocery bag after paying for it. The cashier tried to stop her, saying the bags were specifically for donating to "hungry families". She argued with them....this was how she could afford food. A few of us stepped in and told the cashier to LET IT GO! The manager saw there was something going on, came over, apologized to the woman and gave her an extra bag to make up for upsetting her.

I hear what you're saying... and I seriously doubt that anybody is thinking harshly of her, there's no need. :)

Scott, what if she's so upset that she won't reach out to you and then will have no way of knowing that nothing untoward happened or was directed at her. If she's quit the SKMB for good, then she's never going to know that it was a simple misunderstanding and will go the rest of her lie thinking that we hate her. Is there any way you can contact her first and not let this go on for another day or two? Just let her know that we all love her and don't thnik badly of her at all. Thankee-sai!

Sometimes it is necessary to bend the rules. Obviously, this woman needed the the lower priced food. I hate it when charities get tied up in red-tape. If I had overflow clients nights when the temp was down to artic type numbers like -25C, the cops would let some of them sleep in lock-up. The women's shelter or the Intox would take others. You have to do what you can to help folks....most really need it.
