One of the guys that work with my son-in-law is going back home to Guatemala in a few days. So my son-in-laws boss is throwing him a going away party tomorrow at his house.
His wife told him today that no one is allowed in the house, and it is going to be cold tomorrow. That included Karen and the kids. WTH is that woman's problem??
Because it is going to mostly be Mexicans, and Guatemalans, she thinks they will steal stuff out of her house!! How racial is that??
Needless to say Karen is not going, and neither is my son-in-law.

Ooooh, this is either a horrible miscommunication/misinterpretation, or it's exactly what you think it is: blatant racism.

Maybe your son-in-law's boss sprang this on her at the last minute - I'd be annoyed, too, if someone did this to me - but if she has forbidden a gathering based upon the ethnic presence, then she's really small.

Think maybe an impromptu party on neutral ground, like a restaurant, might be in order? A park, where someone rents some space heaters?

She has known about the party for about 2 weeks. She just told her husband about not wanting them in the house last night. A few of the people that are invited have kids, and I'm sure they won't go because of the weather.
I doubt if at this late date he would change the gathering to a restaurant, since he has food already ordered to be delivered.
That woman used to be very nice, then she had 3 kids, and really changed.
The guy that is leaving has worked for them for many years, and I think it is horrible to do this to him.

Did she come out and tell you that she thinks they would steal stuff because they are Mexican and Guatemalans? Maybe she has some other reason for not wanting them to enter her house? I don't know.

I hope that didn't sound uncaring. I've had a really bad day.

But whenever I go anywhere, as soon as I get there, I'm straight to the bathroom. I feel really bad for the guest of honour. To have a party thrown in your honour, and end up being treated so poorly. Might feel more offensive that if there was no party.

Yes.. how sad for the guest of Honor, not allowed in the house... and not having many people show up to pay their respect to him all because of someone else. I do believe I would have changed the location as fast as possible to people could come and enjoy themselves. So sad
