I think Doctor Sleep is drastically different in almost every way from The Shining. Tone, pacing, overall feel, more characters, more locations, more action, ect.
I'm glad King didn't just try to make The Shining Part 2, you know? That first book has such a unique dreadful, creeping feeling surrounding all of it and I never got that from Doctor Sleep. And I liked it that way.
I still prefer The Shining over this, but this is still a great, solid book that's a worthy successor to one of the classics. I wish he would do more sequels for certain stories.
