For as long as I can remember, I've longed to be a teacher. About six months ago, I talked myself out of it and started studying under a general studies major. After a few days of thinking long and hard, I've decided my one passion is to teach.

I changed my college major to elementary education.

I am so excited to see where this will lead! It's not about the money for me, not really. Money is nice, but I can't help but think of some of the excellent teachers I've had over the years. I want to be that for someone. :)

Good teachers are heroes. They work long hours, they give up personal time, they do so much for "their kids." Please know that for a child who is coming from a bad circumstance, sometimes all it takes to pay tremendous dividends later is knowing that even one adult believes in and cares for them.

I sometimes think that's why I turned out so awesome ;), despite my unfortunate home life: I generally knew at least one adult who believed in me and who cared. Often that adult was a teacher.

And that's not even talking about inspiring them to learn. That's a whole other topic.

Wishing you much success.

Best wishes to you!
I have taught for almost 28 years, and I really love it (most days)! Every day there's something that's quite wonderful about looking into a child's eyes and thinking, "I helped this little human," maybe in understanding volume and density, maybe in becoming a better kid, maybe in feeling he's not alone or maybe in knowing there is someone who cares.

Plus, we need more men as teachers of elementary-age children. So many of them are missing that male role model at home.
I see the kids at my middle school bonding with male teachers so much...they really need that at younger ages as well.

This is a sad but true statement (never even thought of that danie )

My wife has been a Special Education teacher for over 20 years and my daughter is a brand new 5th grade teacher just this fall. My wife still says the rewards outweigh the headaches, but it is close at times. Way to much paperwork and not enough time with the kiddos is her mantra lately. My daughter (and me) could not be more excited.

Good luck to you!!

Be sure to do your homework on the job market for elementary teachers (pun intended). My daughter is off to college next year and plans to major in secondary and post-secondary education for mathematics. We were advised the job market will continue to be dismal in the foreseeable future for elementary teachers coming out of college, and almost nonexistent in the northeast. The market for mathematics, physics and to a degree science teachers still looks good as mathematics and physics teaching positions remain the hardest for schools to fill.
