I was curious if anyone has had any experience with Inkshares or Wattpad. I saw an item over at Deadline discussing an Inkshares project that recently sold movie rights (I believe it was sold, not optioned, but I can't recall at the moment).

I've heard of Inkshares, but because of the news item, I took a closer look and contacted the company. It seems like it could be good for a basically unpublished writer, but there also seems to be, if I understand it correctly, some difficulties in getting published there. I believe one must pass some sort of social-media test to get the project approved, but I'm not sure yet how that works. If it is dependent on writers having their friends/family buy the book, or even a following, then this might not be for me, since I just won't do that -- I will never ask people I know to buy my writing (there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I, in fact, am overjoyed when someone I know publishes something and buy it immediately, and have done that recently; it's actually smart to network like that, but for me, I just can't do it). If someone wants something of mine and I know that person, they would get it for free. And also, I don't do social media.

What I'm thinking is that a great concept would get the book to pass the test, thus negating the need to have a following. Would that be accurate, for anyone who knows? Also, can novellas be published there, or does it have to be book-length stuff? I basically am more interested in selling movie/episodic series rights, not really in book sales (although that would be nice). Does one have to pay anything to the company? It says no in the FAQ, but, you know...I want to be sure.

Wattpad I really know nothing about, but I have heard of some successes there. So, any info on both these sites would be great. I ask this here because I assume some in this section of SKMB have engaged these models. (And if I have asked something like this before, forgive me, I simply forget if I did or not; after so many posts, it's hard to keep track; and besides, this time I am a bit more serious about engaging them. I have done the Amazon thing, but not many sales there, couldn't really leverage my freelance writing status to get noticed on that platform, I regret to inform.)

Thanks!

Nope, by me. I went KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), did Nook versions but haven't checked on those. I was looking at other things, and Smashwords seemed to be recommended, but after going over the first 23 pages of instructions, I felt the mortal coil start to wither, and gave up. It kinda soured me on trying any of the few dozen others that are out there.
