I have friends who are currently anchored in a protected cove surrounded by mangrove trees in the Dominican Republic who are going to ride out the hurricane on their sailboat, not on land. And ya’ll think I’m crazy?

You don't have to be crazy to be stupid.I have friends who are currently anchored in a protected cove surrounded by mangrove trees in the Dominican Republic who are going to ride out the hurricane on their sailboat, not on land. And ya’ll think I’m crazy?

Still shaking my head but prayers being sent that they will come out of it unharmed.Bazinga!
To his credit, he has lived on the water for seven years. His wife only about one. They have stored everything on land, but are afraid they might be in more danger from flooding on land. He says at least the boat can go up and down with the waves (and it has a lead keel so it can't tip over). And they just got a Chihuahua puppy.

Yes. It's the sister of our company's owner and her husband. And she's an Emergency Room RN who now takes on part-time contract work in the islands and countries they visit. No one can be that clueless. Is this a true story, Dio? You have so many of them.
I don't get the bottled water thing, why don't people fill up empty bottles, coolers, whatever containers they have from their municipal water system, heck in a lot of cases they have found that is just what thieves from the bottled water companies do,then they name it something like Crystal Mountain Spring water and voila instant money..stay safe Fljoe keeping you and Spidey and the rest of the skmb Florida residents in thoughts..The stores are already out of many items (like water). Since there are a few days before we start to get bad weather, I'm sure they will get more deliveries. This is about as picked over I've ever seen the stores this many days away from a storm.
I went to Walmart this morning at 6:00 and there were as many people in there as there would be in the middle of the afternoon.

Like fljoe said, starting in May cases of bottled water is kept on hand. 2 --5 gallon containers are filled- well before power will go out. Gallon jugs saved over time are filled. Critters need water too. I am more rural than fljoe and on a well. NO power, no water. Tub for flushing and all those empty cat litter jugs too! Anything empty is filled and frozen in the freezer.I don't get the bottled water thing, why don't people fill up empty bottles, coolers, whatever containers they have from their municipal water system, heck in a lot of cases they have found that is just what thieves from the bottled water companies do,then they name it something like Crystal Mountain Spring water and voila instant money..stay safe Fljoe keeping you and Spidey and the rest of the skmb Florida residents in thoughts..

Makes me see red..a guy I know was looking to fly out of Miami area, and in a two hour span the price of the ticket went up two hundred bucks..terrible when people gouge profits off other people's emergency needs..Gas is almost $3 a gallon around here today
Same here and long lines last night. Daughter filling up as soon as half mark.Gas is almost $3 a gallon around here today
There is supposed to be set rules re increasing price and a hot line to report. When faced with getting ready "now" most pay and hope they can report later. Just wait till the repair crews show up!Hard to like that post,I hope they are keeping track of price gougers!! Is this your house? It's pretty!!10:55 a.m. and conditions in my part of the island (Western coast) haven't deteriorated yet. Irma is still Category 5 with winds up to 185 mph. Rain has been reported in the northern coast. Apparently the eye will miss the island by a substantial distance. Flooding will still be a problem, however. Keeping our fingers crossed. Prufrock21 reporting from the Western coast of PR.
