We've been on the go lately, and last night, for the first time in a while, I didn't have anything I had to work on in the evening. Grandma wanted a nice, quiet evening, which to her means watching TV and chatting with me, which is nice when I like what's on, but if I don't, or even if I do, after about an hour and a half, I get restless and want to go or be somewhere else.

My apologies for that last sentence.

Anyway, since it's important to her, I sat and watched. Last night, it was Suits. She follows it, and I did too in the first couple seasons when the writing was really tight, but then I drifted. But I watched (or endured) it with her. After that, she didn't know what to watch, but we like Donnie Wahlberg on Blue Bloods, he produced a "reality" show about Boston cops that Grandma liked, and I like Mark Wahlberg in quite a few things, even Ted. So we watched Wahlburgers, and then I remembered why I really dislike "reality" TV. Blech.

And now to the reason I started this thread. I'd almost forgotten.

Grandma was really intrigued by Legend and asked me to check it out with her. Sean Bean (aka Boromir, if you need a reference) is a likable character, and I have to say that he did a really good job with his material. "Legend" refers to the persona that someone like him takes on when working deep undercover. The writing was fine if not stellar. In fact, it seemed to be built around Bean's talent and draw, because some of the plot was meh, the other characters were mostly forgettable, and there was a plot device that just made me roll my eyes as much as their beadiness will let me.

Although not in Grandma's sight. She's known me for a while and knows how not easily pleased I am with shows, and she kept asking me, "What do you think? Are you liking it?" and I'd say sure and think but not enough to sit down to this every week.

And then at the end, after they had this drama point that is supposed to keep the viewer intrigued and tuned in for next week, which may work, but it just kinda annoyed me, they introduced, in kind of an aside, this "Let's not kill Sean Bean" gag, which was very funny and engaging. Apparently, he does get killed a lot in the appearance that he makes. I enjoyed that show-within-a-show more than the actual show.

If you have a reasonable willing suspension of disbelief (mine seems to be impaired), and you like reasonable drama and action, can easily accept an attractive young lady being the FBI topnotch covert unit leader, are fine with somewhat baffling bad guys, enjoy being drawn in to a secretive and apparently deadly backstory which reveals itself just a bit at a time, and want to see some really pretty good acting by a quite likable actor, it's worth a watch.

We watched it but not sure I'll be following it. Didn't think to ask my partner what he thought of it--he's the one who wanted to watch it--but let's just say if he doesn't want to watch it again, I won't be terribly disappointed. Of course, he'll most likely be saying the same for Outlander.

Sean Bean is a fine actor… but not sure about this show.

BTW, I'm the same way about TV. The BH loves it, so I end up watching things just to please him--to be together. The give and take of marriage, right? And I did finally get him to watch Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, so our time isn't entirely torture (lol)

Boromir! So that's why he looked so familiar! (lol... I couldn't figure out why Jim Kent in The Strain looked so familiar either.) I've only seen the previews for Legend but I recorded it so I'll post again later :)

The fact that Sean Bean as Boromir was buried halfway into my post means you read it at least that far, which qualifies you for either reward or vilification for masochism. Not sure which.

The give and take of marriage, right?

Indeed. There are times when I'd rather play Solitaire than watch the TV program du jour - and I'm not fond of Solitaire.

ummmm... If I may choose, I'd like the reward option, thank you :)

I tried to like Legend. I wanted to like Legend. I needed a replacement for The Last Ship (which I gave up on after the third episode). I don't like it :(

I did happen to chance upon a show I do like though :) Our PBS station is airing Midsomer Murders. Its a British detective drama. Its a little bit like Murder She Wrote except different :)

Well. Last night, Grandma saw a preview for tonight's episode of Legends, and she called out, "Hey, new episode tomorrow!"

Inwardly, I groaned. Grandma really wants her social time in the evening, and I like social time, too, but not with shows that are tedious to me. So I'll watch it tonight, again, and try to give it my best shot. I think it's in borrowed time. But I'll try.

We were not charmed with first episode but we are going to give it another go.

Welllllllll... since Haunted and Grandma were willing to give Legends another chance, I decided I should too. I recorded it but haven't watched it yet... is it worth watching?

Grandpa I feel odd calling your wife Grandma, ask her if there's another name she likes going by. Better yet, ask her to join the SKMB :)

We watched, and y'know what - I liked it better. They left it with a suspense point, so I guess I'm on for watching it next week too.

Leppsie, she does like Grandma just fine. She'll be 59 in a few months, she gladly tells people that I color in her gray until it turns silver and she can act her age, and we have five grandkids. She's suited for "Grandma."

As for joining, sadly, probably not. She's not real Internet-intensive, and the idea of chatting or foruming has never appealed to her in the slightest.

Leppsie is a cute name :) I should probably color my grey but it hasn't forced me to act my age so I'm ok with it :) I understand the reluctance to get caught up a world outside your own. I wouldn't be here except all y'all are so nice and interesting and I've come to really like y'all :)

ok... I watched the second episode and I have some questions...

Is this spose to be a "dark" crime drama? The background music is dark. Most scenes are shot after sundown or in gloomy clubs or poorly lit offices. The dialog is slow and half of the cast mumbles and everyone's voice is low-pitched. The only halfway animated character is Martin's son.

Does Martin know who he is? Does his nervousness relate to his other facades?

Who is the actor who played the founding father? I'm going crazy trying to place him :(

Yeah, the main character is dark and brooding and unsure of himself, but brilliant. I dunno. I could get tired of the "dark" drama fairly quickly (cross-reference: Arrow, which I still like, but is it never daytime in that burg?). Martin thinks he knows who he is, but confusion creeps in, and it seems to be a complexity that the show is willing to feed out inch by inch.

Founding father played by Zeljko Ivanek. I had to look him up. He's been in lots and lots of things. Zeljko Ivanek - IMDb

Thanks, that was a really good description of Martin :) Sometimes I look at Martin and consider the dark aspect and see Bruce Willis' character in Sin City lol. Normally I like series with "characters" but Legends needs to pick up the pace a bit.

I haven't watched Arrow. I seldom watch anything on CW so I didn't catch any previews until this year. I thought the previews looked interesting, then discovered I'd missed seeing all of season one, and I didn't want to start watching it halfway into the story.

I'D looked at the cast on imdb but didn't find Ivanek's character so thanks muchly for the link. He's an interesting looking dude :) I'm surprised he's been in so many series! I think I remember him mostly for his role in The Event which had the bad luck of being picked up by NBC. NBC cancels every show I like :( The only NBC show I'm watching is Taxi Brooklyn and its not really a continuing story so I feel safe.

Okay, I'm fading. I watched it through this last episode, and it's a decent enough story, I guess, just not one that's catching me. Plus I don't like casual brutality and body count, at least in certain vérité contexts (which is the main reason I haven't watched 24 after a few hours into the first season), and they must be stackin' bad guys, cops, and civilians up like cord wood in the local morgue.

The final episode for the first (apparently, quite short) season is coming up, and we'll probably watch it, but neither of us is particularly enthralled.

Recorded ep1 last week, watched last night.
As a fan of both Sean Bean and 'this kind of thing', I thought it was OK. Not great, not totally Godawful, but OK.
I can just about accept Ali Larter in her role, though tbh the character seems a bit too "all fur coat and no knickers". Almost literally, in one scene. (Which made me laugh when he went 'It's just a smoke detector'.)
What I can't buy is the 'shall we, shan't we?' sub-plot that the writers have dropped in there. I absolutely can't believe that Seany boy could still 'pull' her. Ten years ago, sure, why not. Now...Not. A. Chance.
So...yeah, it was OK. I'll stick with it for a little while. Not sure if my gf will, because a lot of it was outside her frame of reference and I won't have helped by laughing at the crappy op-sec and other 'problematic' areas (like waiting for the Go signal right outside a window and not observing proper on-target radio discipline - which may or may not be real FBI, et al, procedure (but do I ever hope not!)). But it'll do until it dies or I find something better.
